I had a huge famliy party to go to the day after I found out I was pregnant with Josh. I had to tell them straight away as mum knew I had brought wine to drink at the party and when I turned up with no bottle she was a little suss about it as I had brought a pretty expensive bottle. I've been trying to avaoid social occasions (not hard when feeling so ill!. However, if I can't I say I've got a headache, I'm on antibiotics or I'm driving. I'll use one of those excuses tonight when I go to work drinks! Becuse everyone knew so early with us it wasn't an issue, I had stopped drinking with ttc anyway, and at work I had stopped drinking at social functions even earlier just so it wouldnt be obvious.

My mum and MIL both drank small amounts of wine quite often when they were pregnant, but they said that in those days there just wasn't the same amount of information available. You just had to make your own decisions and hope like hell you were doing the right thing.

They've both been wonderful about finding yummy non-alco drinks for me since I've been pregnant though. If its a night function...I either say I am driving or that I have had a huge night the night before and couldn't stomach drinking tonight...people would question why I wasn't drinking as do plenty of it usually!

I never drank when not pregnant either and i still had people suspiciously asking me why i was turning it down when i became pregnant (they didnt know i was pregnant) but i never had anyone ask when i wasnt pregnant??? i was always a social drinker, but on New Years 04 (coming into 05) I was at the firestaton with DF and all the other volys adn went to have a drink and it came straight back up, well form then on they all suspected me being pregs so we did a test a few weeks later as I wasnt due for af for a while.
so because of that i never had to tell anyone as they all kinda knew before we did lol.
made for a very long pregnancy i tell you.

My mum didn't understand when I said I wasn't drinking anymore, she said she had an odd tipple now & then when carrying me - I said gee thanks, no wonder I like it so much

But then I suppose alot of people from our parents generation & even now still think it's fine to do so..

I wouldn't want to risk it & would feel so guilty if baby came out brain damaged or something & it was all my fault

Many babies are born fine but others are born with FAS
Such a tragedy..

I found out I was pregnant when DF and I were overseas. We got back just before Xmas and had a friends wedding to go to. My workmates texted me to come in as they were finishing at 12 and having some drinks and nibbles. I thought ok, we could pop in on the way to the wedding. as soon as I got there they offered me a wine. I said " no thanks, not for me" and they instantly guessed I was pregnant!!!!! Couldnt I have declined becasue I was jetlagged/ driving/ off to a wedding/ it was midday?

As soon as I went out and refused a drink (I am normally a fairly big drinker and DH and I are the life of the party), it took our friends about 2 minutes to realise why I wasn't drinking, hence the fact, we started telling people straight away! MeganGrace, I said that I was on a health kick, liver cleansing diet - I go to the gym so it worked quite well. I used to drink apple juice out of a wine glass and pretend it was chardonnay. Ditto appletiser in champagne flutes. The only time i was offered a drink was from my exs mum and i said no thanks im not feeling well. Then she guessed that i was pregnant later and proceeded to tell me im useless and if i keep this child they will take it from me. lol.

I had to be pretty careful not to make it too obvious with my work because I was always a social drinker and would always stay behind on Friday nights so I would make up an excuse and say I was either going out to the movies or going out for dinner or going away for the weekend. I dont drink so when I go out people wont think it unsual that I am not drinking.

we had our house warming last month and a friend of mine offered me a glass of wine and I said no thanks (I only just found out I was pregnant) and she didnt ask why.

so those ladies who do drink(when you arent pregnant of course :) ) just curious as to what you say to people especially in the first few weeks when you dont want to announce your pregnancy just yet
