The Memorial Gardens in Te Awamutu are great, playground and lake with ducks to feed.

Redwood Park in Te Kuiti south end of Rora st, has a playground with ducks in the nearby river which is fenced off.

Percys reserve is really great. Just off the Lower Hutt motorway. Iv'e been to a few babies/kids birthday parties there. We used to go there for school trips and with youth group etc. Great for family picnic outing. Can also walk short walk to the top and look over Petone and Lower Hutt. Also Aotea Lagoon in Porirua is awesome. Alot like Queen Elizabeth park in Masterton.

CHC botanical gardens rocks!!!! it was always my fav place to visit as a kid. I cnat wait itl we get down there to take haleigh there.

if anyone knows of anywhere in the wellington region/ lowerhutt etc i would love to know, we ahvent found anywhere really great yet.

The park in Masterton is Queen Elizabeth Park.  Great for littlies and nice enough for us to really enjoy.  it's opposite the local swimming pool with the hydroslide (can't miss that one!).  Cool playground, great duckpond, even got deer. 

And I'd agree that The Esplanade in Palmy is a good stop-over.  Great playground and the averies are pretty cool.  Though if you're after food the cafe is a bit pricey.  Lots of picnic spots though.

No um, christchurch has quite a few good place. Feeding the ducks at the gardens is always nice.
I would not recommend any of the malls they are just too stressful. Kowhai Park (kids playground) in Wanganui - on Anzac Pde. Heading south towards Palmy when you've come down the Paraparas. Heaps of themed things - octopus swings, fred flintstone slide etc, plus free (well they used to be) covered BBQ's. And it's by the river, and there is a huge area with heaps of trees - good for a picnic.

As for Hamilton ... the gardens - great big areas for kids to run around and plenty of ducks, rabbits too. Virginia Park in Wanganui is a great place to take a break, it is on the main road if you're heading towards New Plymouth. There are ducks to feed and a track to walk around which takes about 20 mins.

There is an awesome playground in Levin for kids, with a separate area for younger kiddies too. Worth stopping at, and on the main road too.

the autobahn by drury is good too - where you pull off to go to BP etc going south....the cafe there is great and they have a nice playgroud out the back that you get to via the cafe...and they dont seem to object to bringing the kids McDs in if parents are eating at the cafe...

also the cafe at Paeroa is a good place to stop and break up a trip to tauranga etc....think that has a playground in it too?

following another thread, thought we could put down good places to stop in various towns and cities. A lot of us travel and it is useful knowing where some nice kid-friendly places are.

Napier has a new park specifically designed for under 10s. Water play area, sand area, tons of stuff to do and full fenced in! Ice cream place next door which smells divine and doesn't take eftpos. Parking is tough on weekends though. we stop everytimes now. it's just between the aquarium and marineland on marine parade.
