Trish those Kangaroo cuddles made me cry....its just soooo amazing!!

He is looking sooooooo good, I see he will be as handsome as his older brother.

I am so glad that Aidan is doing sooo well.

Hey there,

I have been really busy and trying to cut down the forum thing at work so have just been keeping tabs rather than writing all the time

Well I have finally caught up on this post as have been away for Christmas and glad to hear the good news that Aidan is doing well Trish. You have some amazing photos there, something to look back on in years to come when he is older and it'll be hard to imagine how little he was.

She is doing great. Just gone 6 months and up to 6kg!! I'm just looking back at my journal now - she was in NICU for 6.5 weeks, and in SCBU for another 4 weeks. How wonderful that he has come of the ventilator.. had a look and they have a really different set up to the ones we have for CPAP.. even though there are two types.    Kangaroo cuddles really are nice.. what mum doesn't love the feeling of having their baby skin to skin with them, but for littlies like your bub it's just so much more special, and helps them with temperature too!

ohh forgot to say, excuse his 'red sore cheeks' as routine they have to suction him before they take the ventilator tube out(to do one last check for infection)... and they got it blocked so instead of using water and pulling the sticky plasters off 'slowly' they had to rip them off fast!!!

Yep Emma is right a Kangaroo Cuddle is Skin to Skin contact... He got placed down my top LOL He was so light it didnt feel like I was holding anything!

Well What a day!
Hes come off the ventilator!!! YAY!

he got changed over to CPAP this morning and so far so good (as long as he stops pulling the prongs out of his nose!)

fingers crossed tomorrow I get to give him a kangaroo cuddle!

What an awesome present for you sweetie! Make sure Jamie takes lots of photos of the mummy cuddles with Aidan so we can peek too!

He is doing really well....

BTW i just saw on another site a little premmie (born a week prior to Aidan at week older gestation) whose mum took a babys first xmas photo you would love (cant copy it over)...the little one was finally off all "cords" etc and they placed a xmas stocking so she looked like she was coming out of it...and a wee xmas hat....so precious and it means so much knowing her and wee Aidan are here to celebrate xmas with their families....

well I went to the hospital yesterday and she said hes been very good all night and morning so let me hold him again!!! I get to go today and hold him again! (my only wish for my birthday!)
ohh his ventilation is being turned down (the mean and delta pressure were at 16 they are/were both down to 11) - thats a big thing! they are going to be changing him back to the 'normal' ventilation system and they are hoping to have him off the ventilator in as little as 3 days!

very quick update....
We decided to give him the steroids!
he is doing better already and yesterday afternoon I got to hold him.... for 2 hours!
they have started to turn the ventilation down on his machine too and they said he should be off my NEW YEARS!!!

ohh and they said I can hold him every second day now YAY!

Huge hugs Trish! When I discussed causes of prem labour with my OB during my pregnancy with the twins he said that if you get an infection in the placenta/cervix etc. then there is usually very little that can be done to stop bubs coming early. So even if you had known, your little man may still well have come when he did - he was just in a hurry to meet you!

Trish, it is not your fault, infections during pregnancy are very common and quite a few women carry the organisms and bacteria with them that can cause them , it is simply a matter of chance whether they turn into anything or not and whether they are active at the time of birth etc. And while it seems hard to grasp, obviously Aidan came early for a reason, better for him to have to deal with all this stuff out here, then have stayed inside where things could have gone worse for him with the infection.

Hugs to you and Don't blame yourself. YAY for Aidan being 30 weeks! that's 4 weeks down already.

Things are out of your control and nature will do what nature will do unfortunatley we dont really have a lot of control over anything even if we think we do some of the time.

Trish, it is so easy to fall into blaming yourself, but as everyone else has said it is not your fault! It is apparently quite common to have infections during pregnancy. I had one that wasn't tested for when I was carrying Ella and never had a clue.
You are a wonderful Mummy and no one would ever think you did or didn't do something to cause Aidan's early appearance.

I know we can all be eager to find out why something happens but it's not very often one could have done something about it at the time. I'm sure at no time did you make a concious decision to catch this infection so don't beat yourself up about it.

Well... we met with the doctor and we discussed how hes been and where they think he is heading. His Lungs aren't too good and aren't developing very well due to all the mucus, they have suggested steroids (which is said they very rarely used nowadays!) they will access him on Thursday/Friday and we will need to make the decision to give him the steroids or not! He will be on the ventilator for a minimum of 3 more weeks!
She also found out the results of my tests (my swabs, bloods and placenta tests) and as it turns out I am the reason he is here!
I had a infection in my placenta and in his umbilical cord! and also in the swab they took of 'high up in the vagina' they found infection! (cant remember the name of them right now)
I'm so upset right now! If only I had known or had somehow done something different he may be still inside me and he would be ok Sad he is only '30weeks' today and to think we all thought he was doing so well!

anyway am off to bed, not that I will sleep! I'm too upset at myself for getting this infection

Well.... No Weigh, No Cuddle, No Incubator Change!
Hes not doing too well today infact he needed yet another blood transfusion today! and.... one of the 'big' doctors whats to talk to Jamie and I to discuss how Aidan has been over the last 22 days and discuss what they are wanting to do in the future!
Another one of the doctors said that they are looking at having to give him steroids! I asked when he will be off the ventilator and they said not for a few weeks! will update more tomorrow

Well we have a few up and down days, yesterday he was put back on the hight frequency ventilator as he lungs had lots of mucus on them - and were worse then the day before! he was also up to 80% oxygen which isn't a good thing really!
Well Over night he has made a huge improvement! he had another xray this morning and they are looking heaps better! he is still on the high frequency ventilator but he was ranging 21-50% oxygen! (21% is room air too!) I asked when he will be off the high frequency and back to the 'normal'
one and they said they will more then likely wean him onto CPAP within the next 2 days! WOOHOO!!
fingers crossed it happens!
Ohh thy were supposed to weigh him yesterday but since he wasn't well they didn't... they are going to tomorrow and they said I may be able to hold him again! heres hoping he has a good night so I can!

thanks Vanessa, yeah the surgeon said it is becoming very popular! hes been doing them for 25 years and hasn't had 1 fatality!

i was talking to my mum about aidan's surgery as it sounded familiar...my brother had the same operation when he was about 2mths old. he has a scar from under one nipple that runs to his side and another on his back. he has never had any probs since though

Sucks about your computer! Hubby did that to ours a while back too and managed to recover almost everything, so I hope you can with yours too.

That's awesome news, you've got a good nurse there and what a good weight gain!!

Liz is right about the computer, we had that happen too. Basically things that get lost on a computer stay in it's distant memory for a little while - but the more you do on the computer now, the less it will remember. So take it to a good computer shop soon and hopefully you'll get your photos back (this happened to us after a year of photos of our DD with nooooo back-up!).

Trish i was getting worried but am kinda glad it was a computer glitch! I agree things get "lost" on it that can be found...we always throw photos onto a cd as well...just in case....!!! Hope u can recover them. Poor Jamie i am sure the stress of all going on didnt help with that either...

I am so pleased to see how much weight he has put on...that is wonderful esp after the surgery etc....

that is awesome you get to have cuddles. The nurses up there are all over the place aye, some say touch and cuddle them as much as possible, others say leave them alone and let them grow.

Trish - take the computer to a store - generally things are not lost - they are often there, somewhere. Things are doing ok, like they said to us expect good days and bad!
He got changed back to his original ventilation today (he got changed to a high frequency one before the surgery, so he cant do any of the breathing as the machine is set to 600 breaths per minute!)
He is doing well with his breathing except his right lung has lots of mucus so if he is laying on his left side his right lung 'starts to drown(as the nurse put it) so he had an episode today where the doctor had to step in and give him oxygen through the mask. other then that he is doing good

I forgot to let you know...
He got weighed yesterday... 1430g (was 1130g at birth and 1190g last Wednesday)
I also got to have another cuddle and it was great! I think it went much better then last time! (The nurse today asked me how it was then asked if it was the first cuddle, I said no I held him one the previous Saturday... her and the doctor looked at each other and said its not really a good thing if you know the excate days you held your own son! - they are going to try and let us hold him more!!!) we are going to see if we can tomorrow when Jamie is there, and maybe he can hold him too!


On a different note, our computer had blue screened while we were out yesterday and as it had over heated it done something to the hard drive... we had to reformat and when Jamie restarted the computer(before the format... the drives changed names! eg/ c drive to d drive anyway...) Jamie reformatted the wrong one and WE LOST EVERYTHING! all of our baby photos of Bailey and everything, so now we only have the ones on the site so no more photos from me for a while unless they are taken that day!

oh Trish I have to admit i was so scared to check this thread today! I am so pleased the surgery went well. He is such a strong wee thing!
I didnt realise you guys didnt have a car either - that must make it so hard for you guys to get around and up and down to the hospital all the time. Hopefully you have a lot of help down there?

Hey all, well things are looking up and down :( they say hes doing better after the surgery although it will take a few days to a week to see definite results, hes got a yeast infection in his belly and in the bladder so is on antibiotics for that, and is on antibiotics for the surgery 'to prevent infection' also hes needed another blood transfusion today as his hemoglobin levels were really low again (and why doesn't that surprise me when they are taking blood every 2 hours!)

he is however looking really good today, he still hasn't been put back into his incubator so I get to touch him more and kiss him! its the best thing being able to kiss my own son!
