We left them for a while - actually with a very similar vein of thought to T_rex; that it can't hurt and lots of people say its a good thing (rather than having done a lot of research - I like to look into stuff but you've only got so much time and this wasn't a biggie for me). We couldn't wait till they stopped pulsing because we needed to take cord bloods for some tests, but I figured why not leave it as long as we could before then.

This time we waited til it stopped pulsing and it was nice to have a bit of extra time with DD2. It was the first time I'd really had a chance to look at the cord and feel it!

I am sure I have read about a mum or did not have the cord cut; the placenta was carried around in its own little pouch along with baby until it was ready to drop off itself. I recall that she reckoned it had many positive effects on the wellbeing of her baby.

There is some evidence it can be good for bub to wait - and none that i've seen to suggest its harmful. I *think* it can't be done if you are bleeding too much and they want to administer synto. I didn't do it with DD1 cos I had managed 3rd stage after a really long labour. Second time round we did it, its only a few minutes really. Regardless of everything else it was nice to have several minutes just to focus entirely on baby before MW and DH got in close to cut the cord.

I think it is standard. Have read into leaving the cord until it has stopped pulsating to reduce blood loss for mother and baby. Hi ladies,

When I was researching wether to bank cord blood or not, I came across a fair amount of information about when the cord should be clamped after birth.

I just wondered what your experiences have been or what you are planning to do ?

My MW said it's standard to clamp it 1-3 mins after birth, is this standard ?
