I had major issues with feeding for about 7 weeks. the thing that finally helped after 3 bouts of mastitis as well was pawpaw cream.

I honestly tried everything. also you dont have to wipe the pawpaw cream off before bubs feeds again.

Agree with getting your nips out and aired.
With both my babes I found that I had to really dry my nipples well after feeding and give them frequent airing and they soon toughened up.

I think a really strong tugging feeling *may* mean he's not quite latching right? But I know it all feels weird to begin with. What is your living situation like? A bit of breastmilk rubbed on or some lansinoh; and then leave your top off so the nipples air dry and are not rubbed by anything. But not always socially acceptable

My MW told me to express a bit of milk and then cover the nipple with glad wrap. I have a 3 week old boy and have been using nipple shields for 2 weeks as my right nipple is grazed and bleeding. I use hydrogel breast pads in between feeds, the latch doesn't hurt at all (just a really strong tugging feeling), I've been taking zinc to promote healing and doing a saline wash after each feed but there is no improvement. I guess at least its not getting any worse. I stopped using lanolin and bepathene as they just seemed to make my nipple stick to the breast pad which was awful. At the end of each day my breast literally feels as though it has been through the wringer. Baby is getting plenty of milk so I am happy about that.
