    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=25711">peaceandlove</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 40981<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 17 November 2011 at 11:13am<br /><br />all 3 of my kiddies havejust had chicken pox.  <br />The doctor prescribed pinetarsol, pamol, antihistamine for kids (one dose a day) and calamine lotion.<br /><br />The pinetarsol baths worked well (not particularly nice smell) and the antihistamine REALLY helped with itching - i don't think they itched once.  <br />The calamine lotion was good for the big spots and blisters (lots around their bottoms poor things).<br /><br />If they are old enough - I told the kids if the NEED to itch then to press on the spot not to scratch with their nails so they don't scar - then wash their hands.<br /><br />Good luck!<br />]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=16231">Redbedrock</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 40981<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 15 November 2011 at 3:32pm<br /><br />Fay had chicken pox and was hospitalised so from there we used Pamol regularly (6 hourly)(not Nurofen as she was really dehydrated and it's not good for the kidneys at all I am a renal nurse)  I think at one point we were using pinetarsel baths at least 2 hourly to help soothe her and she had Zertek (antihistamine) to help the itching,  Fay is one of those kids who get hyperactive with Phenergan but that is a good option if he can take it as it soothes the itching and has a sedative effect.  Calamine lotion is not reccomended these days as it dries the skin but can also make the scarring worse.<br />Fay was admitted as she had a really severe case, was dehydrated and the virus got into her spinal fluid.  <br />It does get easier and they do get better, but I remember it as a really miserable time even before the problems set in.  Keep the cool fluids going in and don't worry too much about food untill he feels better - look for wet nappies or checking he is peeing, the yellower and darker the urine the more dehydrated he is<br /><br />We also used Vit a cream for the healing spots when they had scabbed over, to help reduce the scarring, has helped as she is really not as scarred as we thought she would be]]>

You could give him ice blocks to eat if they are in his mouth to help sooth them and at least get some fluid into him.<br /><br />So glad we vaccinated DD as it was horrible when DS had it (and DD was only two weeks old at the time!)]]>

He couldn't sleep and seemed to be in pain. Phenergan seemed to be the only thing which gave him some relief and helped him sleep (though there were no chemists open at 3am in the morning so we had to wait until morning <img border="0" src="https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif" border="0">). All the topical things we tried only helped for a really short time. <br /><br />Totally agree about the calamine lotion, it does dry out the skin and makes the itching worse. The chemist suggested onion juice to relieve the itch - though didn't actually get around to tring it.<br /><br /><img border="0" src="https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/smileys/smiley31.gif" border="0"> it's hard seeing them so miserable.]]>

Try & keep him in as long as possible. Then coat with Hypercal cream, it's soothing, IMO works better than calamine which dries out the skin.<br /><br />My girl had them really really badly & didn't eat for 3 days, she was almost 5 so could tell us what helped her feel better. Not that she could at the time cause she was sorta delirious.]]>

He is just unhappy all day long he will go down for naps but wakes up miserable, not really drinking or eating.</P><P align=left>We are giving him pamol as often as we can but it doesn't seem to really be helping much...............is the end in sight at all, I hate seeing him this upset.</P>]]>
