all 3 of my kiddies havejust had chicken pox.
The doctor prescribed pinetarsol, pamol, antihistamine for kids (one dose a day) and calamine lotion.

The pinetarsol baths worked well (not particularly nice smell) and the antihistamine REALLY helped with itching - i don't think they itched once.
The calamine lotion was good for the big spots and blisters (lots around their bottoms poor things).

If they are old enough - I told the kids if the NEED to itch then to press on the spot not to scratch with their nails so they don't scar - then wash their hands.

Oh god for days there I wondered if DH and I might go mad with the crying, today even better still he ate food and didn't cry all day, still going to bed heaps but he clearly needs it and i'll make the most of it normally he is a cat napper!!!!!!!!!

Thanks all, think we finally turned a corner today he slept well last night, did not wake up screaming as he has the last few mornings, he is still miserable in the day and needs to sleep almost hourly, which i learnt today he was grumpy everytime I put him down he fell asleep so I guess he needs it?

Got pinetarsal and calamine oil which does not dry out the same way apparently.

God its evil.

Fay had chicken pox and was hospitalised so from there we used Pamol regularly (6 hourly)(not Nurofen as she was really dehydrated and it's not good for the kidneys at all I am a renal nurse) I think at one point we were using pinetarsel baths at least 2 hourly to help soothe her and she had Zertek (antihistamine) to help the itching, Fay is one of those kids who get hyperactive with Phenergan but that is a good option if he can take it as it soothes the itching and has a sedative effect. Calamine lotion is not reccomended these days as it dries the skin but can also make the scarring worse.
Fay was admitted as she had a really severe case, was dehydrated and the virus got into her spinal fluid.
It does get easier and they do get better, but I remember it as a really miserable time even before the problems set in. Keep the cool fluids going in and don't worry too much about food untill he feels better - look for wet nappies or checking he is peeing, the yellower and darker the urine the more dehydrated he is

I remember as a child, I caught chicken pox as well and it was really hard for me to cope up with it.

Probably the real issue here is when they start to itch because when they all itch at the same time, it would be a lot hard to restrain yourself from doing so.

Nurofen isn't recommended if they are dehydrated either so if he isn't drinking I'd avoid it.

I didn't know there was a vaccine for Chicken Pox, might read up a bit on it.

We used pintarsol in the bath, calamine on the spots, pamol and neurofen. You could give him ice blocks to eat if they are in his mouth to help sooth them and at least get some fluid into him.

What about baby neurofen (fenpaed)? When my DS gets ear infections he is utterly miserable until we use that in conjuction with pamol, then he is ok. DS1 had it last christmas and was misrable. He couldn't sleep and seemed to be in pain. Phenergan seemed to be the only thing which gave him some relief and helped him sleep (though there were no chemists open at 3am in the morning so we had to wait until morning ). All the topical things we tried only helped for a really short time.

Totally agree about the calamine lotion, it does dry out the skin and makes the itching worse. The chemist suggested onion juice to relieve the itch - though didn't actually get around to tring it.

Bath in pinetarsol, you need to reduce the itch. Try & keep him in as long as possible. Then coat with Hypercal cream, it's soothing, IMO works better than calamine which dries out the skin.

My girl had them really really badly & didn't eat for 3 days, she was almost 5 so could tell us what helped her feel better. HELP

DS2 has chicken pox and is MISERABLE - beyond miserable.

He got a big blister on his face about a week ago but thought nothing of it, last weds he was a bit grizzly but nothing much then Thursday he woke screaming and had a few spots mainly on his head.

Friday much worse screamed on and off all day many more spots, yesterday worse again and today no better. He is just unhappy all day long he will go down for naps but wakes up miserable, not really drinking or eating.

We are giving him pamol as often as we can but it doesn't seem to really be helping much...............is the end in sight at all, I hate seeing him this upset.
