We hired a carseat....what a PITA! She looked uncomfortable the whole time she was in it, it was tricky to use and it was money that we didn't need to spend.
2nd time she was 6months & we took our own carseat (which is a Meridian Safe n Sound so a bit bulky) & a mountain buggy. It was so much easier having our own carseat. And the buggy was great. We traveled with AirNZ & they let us use the buggy right up to boarding and it was there straight away when we got off for us to use. We didn't have to pay anything extra for luggage but this was coming up two years ago (wow time has gone fast )
But then if you might have to take public transport you probably won't want lots of luggage.

We have only rented a car seat once and honestly it was a pain coz we arrived late at night and trying to work out a different car seat was a pain!! Easier to take your familiar one I reckon lol.

We've always found that it is easier to take our own car seat.

    Author: Hopes
Subject: 40959
Posted: 10 November 2011 at 6:32am

We took ours - mostly because I was too tight to pay to hire one when I knew we could travel with ours. It was no trouble at all. If you'll be using a family car over there, I imagine the only time you might need to lug it round is between the airport and their place, I'd give it a shot and live with that if I had to.

The one other thing is that Aussie has some weird regulations round baby seats. Some you can buy in NZ aren't technically legal there. Our Radian isn't, which is weird, because in my mind it's one of the safer brands on the market. I think the odds of actually getting a ticket for it are ridiculously silly, though, it's not like the police check the brand, they just check the baby's in one!
