Our day care is closed until the second week of Jan and we have to pay full price right the way through.

Its hard when you don't really agree with a policy, and in your situation, I am sure you could negotiate given there doesn't seem to be any specific agreement. My sister is with Porse and she is being paid "holiday pay" over the xmas new year break. It has been worked into her pay since she began working with them.

We have our youngest in DC and over the xmas period he is away for 2 weeks 4 days and we have reduced fees for the period as it is his "annual leave" for the year. Each place is different so as fire_engine said get it sorted now so you don't get anything like this again.

The difference is, when someone in a daycare centre goes on holiday, you are still receiving the service that you are paying for, because your child is still attending and cared for. Why should you pay for a service you're not even receiving?? She's a home based carer - it's not for you to fund her holidays for nothing. At our centre we pay for stats but get 3 weeks holiday a year that we do not pay for. If we choose to put the kids in over the two weeks of Xmas / NY we have to pay for the whole week, but they do reduced hours so we pay for the shorter days. Most people take 2 of their weeks, or at least one week of their holidays over that time.

I would not be paying a self employed person 600 for doing nothing! But you should have an individual contract with her that specifies how she manages these things ... Might be a good time to sort that now so there are no more nasty surprises.

Our HBC - if she shuts down/makes herself unavailable, we don't pay. She only does this for 10 days a year and it's over Christmas/New Year which suits us. Stats, we pay but we get a day in lieu to use some other time. I guess it is the same as somebody in a childcare centre still getting paid when they go on holiday, maybe the weekly fees are less because they DON'T include holiday pay...but I would have thought it should be in the contract...

We don't pay for any stat days or for the days the centre is closed over christmas. If they aren't available to care for our children, we don't have to pay. Our centre will be open apart from Stat days but we get 2 weeks holiday a year free so can take it over xmas and not pay at all. Whoah actaully I just re-read - I was going to say that a holding fee seems fair as the carer doesn't have the ability to take another child and is not receiving income from your child - but if it's because she's taking her holidays - and you still need care that's crazy! if I was your house cleaner and wanted to take a holiday but still charged you for cleaning your house...daylight robbery! Wow, that is rough! We're with Barnardos, and I'm not sure, but I don't think we pay when our provider goes on holiday. Is she with a company? Maybe talk to them for clarification?

I know we are closed over a few days & I think that is not charged. I know if you put in for holidays you have to pay but if I put in for holidays & you took the option that you keep your children home then you don't pay, or they find you alternative care over that period so it's normal cost to you.

When I did it with my friend, we just coincided our holidays, I asked when she was off & said I'll take that off too. Yeah Clover I reckon its a bit average of her to expect payment through that period! I find it hard enough forking out $200/week for 30hrs childcare let alone when she isnt even being cared for!! $600 for nothing is nuts - especially at christmas time!

So - how do I go about finding out more without it getting back to her? Our childcare operates over Christmas (except the stats) so you can leave children in if you want. However, if you do take them out over the two-week Christmas period, they don't charge you. Hey Guys,

Just after some comparisons. Our home-based daycare lady has just told me her terms of payment over xmas where she takes her holidays. Which basically is - full payment as normal for 3 weeks where I have to find someone else to look after DD!

Thought this was a bit off so I have asked someone I know with another organization (porse) and they pay them the STAT days (fair enough, not the carers 'fault' its a holiday!) but they dont pay them the days they are taking off as 'leave' - which sounds much more reasonable.
