I do something similar to Kelly - I have a book (like a journal) that I write things down in during the year (I try for once a month) and then on DD's birthday I write a couple of pages about what we have done during the year and what milestones she has reached that year.

DD has had a birthday party every year and I plan to continue to do so. I enjoy gathering our friends together in celebration, maybe later on I will be less enthusiastic about that!

We also have a special birthday dinner on the day with my mum & dad, my two sisters and my nephew. I would have liked to keep them a surprise...however when she was snooping through my wardrobe one day(hunting out my wedding shoes to play dressups ) she came across the box they are in thats labelled "letters to Caitlyn " so I ended up explaining it to her,but informing her that she was not to touch them till she was 21.
So whenever she talks about growing up she mentions how she will be 21 one day and "then i'll get my letters"

For the kids birthday we do a special birthday outing every year on their actual birthday (if its a work day then DH takes the day off, Ella takes the day off daycare). We also have a family birthday dinner (incl grandparents, uncles) in the weekend.

This year both kids had a birthday party (Tom's 1st so we wanted to have a party for him and Ella hadn't had a birthday party since her 1st so she had a small one with just 2 friends). From next year the plan is that the kids will have a party on alternative years- so Ella will have a 5th party next year (which she is already planning) and Tom will have one the following year. Have no idea how this will work in theory so will just to see how it goes.

Growing up, we didn't do outings every birthday or have parties with friends over at all. We always got great presents and a party tea, and on our tenth birthday we were allowed to choose somewhere to go for a day out with the family, like the zoo or something. There were eight of us, and you can imagine that it just wouldn't have been possible to 'do' something every birthday!

It's nice knowing that our birthdays were still super-special even though Mum and Dad didn't spend as much money as lots of parents do. On the other hand, I'm planning on enjoying the freedom of having less kids (I say that now, I guess it could change... but I can't realistically see me stretching to eight!!!) and being able to perhaps make family outings on birthdays a bit more frequent.

I kind of like the charm bracelet tradition for a girl - very cliched now, but still very cool. We have celebrated our kids birthdays every year our kids are 8 and 3. DS1 didn't have one this year as we sold our house and we were in the middle of packing. I think it is important for them to remember celebrating it with family and friends .

I never had birthday parties and want my kids to enjoy theirs.

Every year on her birthday since her very first one,I've written my daughter a letter,outlining what shes done that year and usually finishing with how much I love her etc.

I have them all saved in a box in my wardrobe for her to recieve when shes 21

My son...im still trying to think of a tradition! I want to do something similar but a bit different for him,hes two though so I need to figure it out quick

My youngest is not one yet,but shes going to get a Pandora bracelet and I'll get her a charm for it each year.

growing up it was always birthday person chose what was for dinner and then a cake for dessert. Usually we had a friend to stay as well. lol..not that exciting but we were never that into birthdays because our family always lived so far away. We only had birthday parties every few years.

We do an outing ( zoo, Kelly Tarltons, might try the stardome this year) on the closest weekend day to their birthday so Dady can come too.

On the actual day they pick somewhere to go for lunch. Then family/friends come over for dinner and I make a cake of their choice.

I'm not that keen on having a full blown party for them evey year.
