OMG I loooove talking baby names lol. But I like to think that if I share my fav names with my family and friends it's kind of like claiming the name ;) When I was pregnant with the twins I had the names decided as soon as I found out their sex. I remember getting a couple of bad reactions to the name Esmé but it didn't bother me in the slightest. One woman actually told me she thought I was cruel to name my child that lol. I know what I like may not be for everyone but I couldn't care less what everyone else thinks ;)

With my first pregnacy i discussed names i liked with friends but found they where VERY vocal about my fav.s. One went as far as to comment that my daughters name was a "strippers" name and why would i name her that. We dont share our name choice but mostly because I like some element of surprise. The other reason is Im also not a big fan of hearing other peoples opinion of our name choice. We told a few people in the beginning a name we had picked out but in the end named her something different! Although, ou DD is named Alice and if we had a boy, DH and I both love Edward but people will be mentioning Twilight until the cows come home and teasing us about it, so I don't know if it would be worth the hassle! Hahahahaha ditto to the living hell part my babies are named within 3 weeks of the 20wk scan and nobody would dare suggest we changed the name OR use it - not that I'm scary or anything

My cousin used 2 of my favourite names with their 2 boys but I couldn't complain - their boys are both about 18mo older than my 2! Still I got the 'discussion' about how I wasn't allowed to use the names at all for my boys because cousins (even second-cousins) with the same name is weird. I don't mind sharing our favourite baby names.
None of our family or friends are pregnant so don't have to worry about them being "stolen"

Our boy's name is pretty much set, but not too sure on our girls name yet. Will have to wait and see what flavour we have at the scan

We decided to keep our names a secret, but told everyone the baby's sex. We figured that by keeping the names to ourselves, we would still have a surprise on the birthday :) I wasn't worried about people stealing the name, but was a bit concerned that people would press us to change it to a name that they preferred. As it turns out, this is what happened. When our son was born and we told people his name (Joseph Ezra), several family members commented on how we should have named him something different. Everyone had an opinion before DD was born and some of the suggestions were strange.
However afterwards they all said what a lovely name and how well it suits her.

We're keeping our name to ourselves, mostly because we don't want people to judge us, or make negative comment. Less chance of that happening when he's been born and named.

Everyone knew from the day we had our 20 week scan our baby was going to be called Nathan.

I think there was less chance of someone else taking our name because they knew we would name our DS that without a doubt. So they would be causing the double up.

In saying that, I have the same first and last name as my SIL and it's not that major. You soon work a way around same/similar names.

The names were the only things we kept secret with our girls. Appears that I go against the grain, I am happy to discuss baby names with family and friends. I have never "lost" a name although a friend did say that my only boys name last time later entered her list (we were due 6 days apart) and we discussed it and I told her to choose the name she wanted, not to let me stop her, altho as it turned out she had a girl and I had a boy. I don't mind getting opinions and suggestions on names, it doesn't necessarily change my opinion. I like to keep the names to myself, as I like that to be the surprise for family when baby is born. I would like to think you can tell friends your baby names! but unfortunately sometimes they either decide they like that name or my bring the name up in conversation with another friend who is having a baby...then you hear that babies name is the one you talked about.
Most of our friends keep their baby names 'close to their chest' which is fine as we did the same before we had our daughter! i think we may have told 1 of me close friends but that was it (she never told anyone else)
so No i haven't lost a baby.
