My little man is booked to have his out in November (in Australia though) so the pricing is completely different we get medicare and we have private health insurance. The overnight hospital stay is the biggest chunk.. Surgery is roughly $400 (of which we get back 350.60) - Anathesiast is nothing (covered by medicare) and the hospital is $1965.30 which we should get around half back.
He is having his out because they are also HUGE and he snores like an old man, the concern is the lack of oxygen to the brain. The only option is waiting until he grows in to them which is around the age of 8.
He does get tonsilitis but that wasn't the concern. Also large tonsil can affect the hearing too.

Well it seems the specialist wont make an 'advice wanted' appt, so guess we will stay on the public list. She also told me the cost all up for the appointments and the op would be 4.5k!!

For a 30 min surgery, I always thought the cost was a little excessive!
Have you thought about other options than removal? Apparently the removal of tonsils doesnt mean that the child will stop suffering from tonsilitis (I know, sounds stupid considering you remove them) and will still suffer throat infections etc.

Ask the surgeon as most surgeons have a contract price with the hospital they work with. Both my boys got mine done by different surgeons at the same hospital and it was the same price (2.5 years apart). They charged us $3K everything.

Give one of the hospitals a call and ask, given it cost me a thousand or so on my excess I imagine the actual op was a lot more than that.
