Feeding pillow - I have a U shaped one and it does make the feeds so much easier.

Lanolin - I use purelan and once you don't need it for the nips - its great for lips

And for me the hydrogel breast discs were a savior, straight out of the fridge and on to sore cracked or blistered nipples. Some nights I wouldn't have gotten any sleep with out them.

Breastpads are a must for me.

Also this time i love my breast feeding singlets. They are nice & soft. I wear them to bed & its nice not having to wear a bra overnight & they arent tight fitting like a bra.

Also food in general i guess. Breasts, support, loads of water and good food, and baby    Oh and determination . Everytning else is non essential really. Although I fou d reusable breastpads helpful.

Everyone is different really. I never needed breastpads but loved my feeding pillow. I'm quite tall and found I bent over a lot without the pillow to hold him higher. Not a must have of course, any pillows will do I just found normal pillows too soft.

I also found the lanolin cream excellent as did having a set of nipple shields on hand for a 'nipple blowout' I only used them for a couple of days but since I became desperate for them late on a Friday evening it was great to already have them on hand.

Will get a comfy nursing singlet next time, to wear to bed sleeping in a bra was really uncomfortable and I needed something to hold the breast pads. Oh and I second the tripillow and lots of comfy nursing bras and singlets. I bought adequate but very average bras in sensible colours last time thinking I wouldn't need them for long, but still have the sad and tired old things and she's still going on the boob. But this time around I'm investing a bit more in sexy but comfortable ones so that if BF lasts this long this time at least the bras will look better! Nursing tops for wearing to bed are a must if you are a leaker to, to hold the breastpads in. I'm with you Jaune, loads of washable breastpads, I was a leaker and still used them til her 2nd birthday.

But the most valuable thing I had in the early days was a basket which I kept in the lounge, it contained snacks, water, magazines, book, tissues, and the remote controls and phone would go in there too. Also something warm, ie shawl, if in winter. That was my lifesaver as I was always forgetting something and did not want to disturb bubs once feeding began. snap on the reusable breast pads I leaked something terrible and went thru so many boxes of disposable ones till I found them, lanolin cream in the beginning and while not essential I would have loved a comfy chair to feed in, normal furniture was very uncomfortable for me and my short legs.

Nice to have - good bra, comfy place to sit (especially for those long early feeds), lots of water and snacks

No distractions (either take the phone off the hook or leave it clsoe by if you plan on answering it).
Something to put one foot up a little if sitting up to feed (i.e feed from the right side put the right foot up). I had a little box that worked, but some use a phone book/block of wood.
As mentioned above, great easy open bra, water.
A CLOCK to see how long feeds have been going - sounds nuts doesn't it?!?!
Sometimes a firm pillow for baby to lie on comfortably and bring up higher to boob.

That is the best thing about breastfeeding, the only 'must haves' are breasts and a baby (or young child).

'Nice to haves' are a good bra, a good diet, supportive friends and family.
