I too have a F + P 8kg top loader. It has no agitator and is aquasmart and therefore very similar to a front loader. The instructions say to use front loader detergent. we've got a front loader - the normal wash is 1 hour 40 mins - however it has a 'quick wash' function that takes 35 mins and does just as good a job on normally dirty clothes.

who cares if you leave a sock out and can't open the machine once it has started? Just stick it in the next load.

hmmmm, thanks for all the responses, a pretty mixed bag of opinions really, I like the idea of a front loader as we are on tank water so using less water is a big bonus, seems like the biggest downfall is that it take longer to do a wash, but since my last machine took about 3-4 hours (it was really broken) that probably wont bother me...we cant afford a new one at the moment so are just going to get something of trademe that will hopefully last at least a year or so, might try a front loader, and if i hate it atleast i know its not permanent as next year we will prob get a new one...

We've got a newish F&P top loader but you use the front loader powder etc and it's kinda like a front loader.

I have a samsung front loader and love it! You can change the cycle depending on what you're washing but I put everything on the same and that's 1hr 16min. Sure, slower than a top loader but it's more gentle on the clothes and economical on water.

Our F&P top loader just died in the last couple of weeks and we went for a Samsung top loader, same as high9. Samsung 7kg
As I use cloth nappies, I decided I would stick with a top loader. The machine is awesome. The drum is bigger than an agitator top loader. I think it has all the benefits of being a top loader, and the gentleness of a front loader.

We have a fisher and paykel top loader 9.5kg it is awesome and can do one really big load which I love. It might not work for you, but we bought the biggest size we could fit (8kg), and I LOVE having the extra room for giant loads. We've got a Panasonic Front Loader and I LOVE it. You can add things at anytime as it has a slightly tilted drum. There is a quick wash which takes just under a hour which works great. The 'normal' wash takes about a hour and a half depending on the weight of whats in the machine.
We had a top loader before but after using this one I would never go back to top loading again.

Any way, there are good things about front loaders and bad things...they take for ages to wash...I hate that. I have a front loader and i despise it. You shut the door and turn it on and thats it for 2 hours, no sneaking in that last sock. And it takes TWO HOURS. And its a pain to bend down and load and unload (its on the floor). I'm sure it is water economical and all that though. I have a Samsung one with a diamond drum. Best purchase ever! It's top loader but doesn't have an agitator (that piece in the middle of most top loaders) so is like a front loader apparently. It's fantastic! I can get the exact details on it if you want. It does a fantastic job with washing, has delayed start, various wash cycles from delicate, super wash, water saving etc...

It is a 7kg but quite a bit smaller than the F&P 7kg machines which is perfect if you are renting.

We looked at proper front loader machines but they were quite low on the ground and found the sales people kept saying you had to buy this stand for it which was $2-400 as well (to make it a bit higher off the ground).

Also has a safety feature that if the lid is open for 20 or more seconds it drains the tub. I had to buy a new one last year and we ended up getting a basic F&P toploader version - it is great. It is a 6.5kg one, washes well and nice, easy and cheap.

Not sure on front loaders, but mum got one of those F&P 8kg top loaders that is meant to be like a front loader (they are really expensive) - she thinks its great. Even cleans up some of her horse covers when she's been sneaky & put them through!
