My DS2 has his first ear infection at the moment and he's miserable No tugging at his ears here, but he has been a real pain about sleeps particularly at night. He's also had a higher than normal temperature (but not a raging fever) since yesterday and normal cold symptoms as well.

I took him to the paed this morning when he woke up with a high temp and still looking like he hadn't had any sleep at all. She checked his ears and throat and said both look red and we've come home with antibiotics, brufen and ear drops. Crossing my fingers that this means tonight will be a bit easier, but I suspect it'll be another couple of days at least before he's feeling brighter

She was just super cuddly, didn't want to do ANYTHING, just sat on our laps and sucked her fingers and slept alot. 2 days of anti biotics and she was right as rain again.

She didn't actually pull at her ears or anything, just had a nasty cough and runny nose. We thought a throat infection so took her to the docs the next day (were closed that night) and he just looked at her ears and said right she gets anti-biotics, he never checked her throat.

    Author: T_Rex
Subject: 40071
Posted: 09 August 2011 at 8:04pm

I'm going to buck the trend and say my girl knows and has always known the pain is in her ears. Pre-grommets, she'd finish every meal with food smeared all through her hair around her ears cos she tugged at them constantly, and her ears were permanently covered in scabs and scratches where she'd gouged them with her fingernails. Plus she'd come home from daycare with sand in them cos she'd been rubbing sandy hands on them whilst playing in the sandpit. Immediately after grommets, all this disappeared instantly (I even got to stop washing her hair after each meal!).

Now, she's back to getting heaps and her ears are back to scratched and sandy again. She's got better manners these days so tends to eat with cutlery now

The other giveaway is issues with lying flat. She'll relax and fall asleep on your shoulder if it's a mild infection, but wake the instant you try to lay her down. If it's a bad infection, she screams in your arms as much as in bed. But it's definitely worse at night.

He often ends up with a cold too and can get a temp with it.

Of all the ear infections he's had, and there has been a few, he has never ever tugged at his ears. From what I've read they can't distinguish where the pain is coming from, so wouldn't even think to touch their ears, they just know they are sore and uncomfortable. Obviously though that changes as they get older.
