Personally there's no way I'd be giving my kid antibiotics 'just in case', especially if I have been told it is a viral infection...that's how we end up with super bugs and antibiotic resistant infections. I agree with T-Rex though, you can always fill the script later if you feel you need to, but I'd take a wait and see approach for now; I've done that once or twice and they didn't end up needing them.

We also only give Pamol/nurofen to our lot if they are in pain, not to reduce fever..if they happened to have a fever AND pain well then not much we can do about that but we don't treat fevers in our house. DS2 had tonsillitis when he was 11 months old and he only had 3 doses of Pamol for the nearly week he was sick and only because he was in pain...for the most part he slept it off.

Make sure to keep him as hydrated as you can, though I know this can be hard sometimes. If this is the first round of anit biotics - Id give it. Unless they have tested/swabbed etc they cant be sure its not bacterial - which is why they give the 'just in case' . If it is viral - expect a rash - if it scares you take him to ED - trust your mummy instinct

Keep up with the pamol / nurofen as suggested - temps can hike super fast - which can be quite dangerous - just dont exceed the daily allowence - 3 dose for nurofen, 4 for pamol. Its not just for fever - he could be achy or have a headache too

You can, but only for a certain number of doses. So nuerofen 3 doses a day, and pamol 4 doses a day. I split them into nurofen every 8 hours, pamol every 6.

Honestly it sucks to be medicating, but the alternative is worse IMO. It sounds like what we have in our house. Its viral and it's horrible but it does get better it just takes a long time. I've given my little girl waaaay more painkillers than I've taken myself in my life. It's heartbreaking, and I hate doing it. So I only give them if she's really miserable. If I can get her some releif by rocking/walking her to sleep or distracting her with a fun game then we do that instead. If she's sore enough that I can't do that, then I give her the drugs.

If you think it's viral, and it's likely to clear up soon, then I'd just hold on to the antibiotic script, you can always fill it later. Just be aware that if you do decide to give him some antibiotics, give him the WHOLE course. I think a lot of dr's tend to give antibiotics for parent reassurance because its pretty hard to say to parents its viral, we can't do anything.
Her idea re. the pamol and brufen, won't hurt him, as long as you only did it for 2 days it would be fine, but TBH if he doesn't really need it I probably wouldn't give it. I would prefer to give both at the same time in the case of a high fever then none for the rest of the day. And also I would give them if he was particularly irritable and sad.
Also if you are going to give it as often as she has recommended, you should give brufen only 3 times in a 24 hour period and pamol only 4 times in a 24 hour period. And also if you are giving brufen often, I would probably give it with milk of food as it can be quite harsh on the stomach.

I wouldn't give the antibiotics for something viral. GPs are so quick to give them 'just in case'. Im needeing some advice please

My son is sick atm, not too sure whats wrong, he has high temps, vomited on monday, wouldnt drink yesterday or eat, kinda the same today, hes really tired, took him back to doctas today and she recons its just viral but put him on antibotics anyway, now she said that because he has high temps to keep up with the pamol and nurofen, she recommended that in the morning i give him a dose of pamol, wait 4 hours then give a dose of nurofen, then wait 6 hours then another dose of pamol, she recons we do it for a couple of days, this worries me abit with how much he would be having, i know she a docter and knows best but want some reasurrance from other mums who has also done this ?
