part of the reason that australia offers the 'incentive' is so that a decision is made by parents either way - as there are alot of people who start the vaccination process and then forget to continue and vaccinations get behind, so encourages parents to make the decision either way and declare that decision and if you have decided to vaccinate then it gives you an incentive to get them done at the age appropriate time, it also allows parents who have made the choice not to vaccinate to declare their decision too

If it's going to work the way T_Rex explained, I have no issue with it. I actually have larger issues with the other 'incentives' in the report.

At the end of the day, all they are considering is a scheme that is similar to what Australia has and even if you object you can still receive payment. Like others have stated, it is supposedly to get those who are apathetic or haven't got round to making a decision one way or the other, to make one.

It could be argued that this breaches one of the basic principles of informed consent..and that's that the consent has to be free from coercion and that offering money is classed as coercion. I have just been sorting my forms for the baby bonus over here in Australia and yep they have mentioned to me you get maternity immunisation allowance here.. two payments which I think you get one if you do vaccinations up to 18 months and the second part up to 4 years (I only briefly read the notice on it) and its about $125 each time so $250 all up.

I have no idea if it would convince non vaxxers though? It doesn't seem like enough money to sway my opinion anyway (though after careful research we are most likely going to vaccinate)

Not sure what its like in NZ at the moment but whooping cough is currently pretty big over here so when our baby arrives (hopefully in the next week ) we will be getting vaccinated against that to protect him. They are not talking about paying you to vaccinate, they are talking about paying you to show up at your docs and actively make a decision. You'd get the money for either vaccinating or for declaring you've decided not to. It's to get those who "don't get around to it" to actively make a choice. So no, it won't sway your decision one way or another. But it might encourage you to make one.

I do see the reason of why they are doing it, the reasons we haven't had a lot of the diseases we vax against is because people have been vaxing their kids. Now we have some people making a song and dance over vax's and pushing their opinions onto other people so people aren't vaxing their children and some of those diseases are breaking out again (talking measles here). I know some people have made very very informed decisions not to vax and that is cool that is their choice, I am sure those people aren't the ones making a song and dance over their children maybe being kept away from school and ECE centres while there is a breakout.

It doesn't worry me (but then I'm pro-vaccinating so I WOULD say that ).

Hi everyone!

So this is quite a controversial topic BUT I was wondering what everyone thought about the governments proposal of paying people to vaccinate their children...

I will put my hand up and say that I choose not to vaccinate however, even if I did, I think it is disgusting that money could be the reason behind someone choosing to do so. Its hard enough to make an informed decision one way or the other so I think it is extremely unfair of them to even consider this...
