There were over 40 Mums at Slingbabies it was a great turn out, met the lovely callie and Alex so many newborns cluck cluck.

We went to one run at our local Playcentre. There were other venues around town but I chose to go somewhere familiar because I knew DS would be happily occupied there while I fed DD2. At the event in Levin last year the coordinator was approached by a woman with her newborn baby especially to say thank you as that event had provided her with a safe and supportive environment to breastfeed in public for the first time. Mostly i just wanna hang out with some other breastfeeders. I only know one other IRL and all my other mummy friends are formula feeders. So i'm constantly feeling awkward and uncomfortable at coffee groups. ETA: hit post too soon - so i just wanna see im not the only freak with the boobs out in the world

I'm really looking forward to it too!!

I think ive been pretty lucky so far in that I've never had anything but positive comments and the odd smile, however, I do know people who avoid BFing in public for fear of negativity and that really upsets me. BFing is a natural and beautiful thing and something that should be celebrated.
The Big Latch on is basically a way for a breastfeeding mums all across the country to celebrate what it is we are doing for our children and as final part of breastfeeding awareness week. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. We are planning on attending the West Auckland sling babies meeting- I have always intended to go along to their meetings anyway, so this is a great excuse! Gah I can't quote from here. Hun that was not a personal at you at all it was a generalisation coming from my experience and talking to orher women and having conversations with others. It seemed to be the major reason for women not. Bf in public was the fear of attracting comments or offending others.

What I meant by that was I find it sad that this enters anyones mind .

Please don't take it as a personal attack.

And I try to think if people are uncomfortable seeing someone bf it is their issue not anyone elses .

It is nothing to do with breasts as a sex object, it is to do with the fact that it makes people uncomfortable as they don't know where to look. I'm not sure how hundreds of women feeding their babies in groups is going to fix that?

I'm not saying don't do it, simply that I don't get it. I honestly don't think we've got a huge issue in this country with people being offended by breastfeeding.

Oh and as for the personal dig, I'm pretty sure that making sure my boob isn't on display for everyone to see isn't putting others before my babies basic needs... it takes me all of 5 seconds to latch my baby.

Clover you don't have to go if it makes you uncomfortable.   I think it's a fantastic way to get bf mamas together in celebration of BF.    Especially in a country with such poor bf rates.

What I would like you to explain to me ( seriously) is why women should 'have' to be discreet whilst bf. I have to say I've seen more boob on show at the mall with all the teenage girls flaunting it . Is it the fact that a baby is feeding ? Honestly I've asked this question a few times and no one gives me an honest answer.

I'm looking forward to our one as well, its part of Breastfeeding awareness week and is a great bit of harmless fun, all the venues are supportive of bf mums.

Surely a huge number of women breastfeeding in public places just reinforces the issues that people have with public breastfeeding in the first place?

There will always be people who don't think that women should feed anywhere but at home, that is a shame but they are entitled to their view, whether we agree with it or not. I think that *most* people are accepting of breastfeeding in public so long as it is done in a discrete fashion. I don't think having large groups of women all feeding at the same time is discrete and would make most people, probably myself included, uncomfortable. I actually think events like this only make the acceptance issue worse, not better.

I am a breastfeeding mum and I do feed in public. I don't use a blanket to hide anything but do always lift my top up, not down which minimises the boob on display. I fully support the right to feed whenever and wherever we need to and would certainly have something to say if someone ever passed comment, however, as I said above, I'm not comfortable that these latch-on events are the correct way to go about it.

Just a quick post to say that the Auckland Young Parents Breastfeeding Group are hosting a venue at the Organic Africa Cafe, 373 Parnell Road, Parnell, Auckland. I'll be there to count the mums latched on and bring you hot drinks, wrangle children etc.

Open to mums of all ages - would love to see you there at 10am (ready for the record attempt at 10.30am) - Women's Health Action shouting coffees/hot chocs.

OhBaby! is also hosting a venue at the Parenting Place, 300 Great South Road, Greenlane.

You can check out the nearest venue to you if you'd like to come along on Friday morning.

Venues are registered by anyone who is interested in hosting an event.

There are two currently registered in Waitakere, one is the Slingbabies event which has a venue but Rebecca from the West Auckland parents' centre hasn't yet confirmed... Big Latch On is coming up and we are getting there with venues now registered all over the country... we still need more though! OhBaby ran an event in Auckland last year - hopefully they'll be able to do it again
