Within 2 days our daughter was eating, opening her mouth, wanting food and stopped gagging and vomiting. We are now 2 weeks into it and she eats like a horse, is loving new foods, growing, filling out - it's awesome to see she is thriving once again. We also have gone off the Novalac formula and gone to a soy one which she seems much better on as well.

So once again THANKS to all for your help.
It's so wonderful to have this website and forums and access to a network of people to share thoughts, info and ideas with!

She travels a bit to see them and, unfortunately for her, has had to see them a bit for her and her son. From what she says they are very nice and thorough. I also know a nurse there and she is lovely. There are a few GP's there and I'm not sure exactly which one my friend goes to but could find out if you like. I went with her to her son's 6wk check up and the GP seemed really nice.

The paed would look at all the potential causes and the SLT would look at the specific feeding/swallowing behaviours. The referral to the SLT should probably be via the paed as they need to rule out medical causes first.

Finding a GP is so damned hard, I know. Is there any chance that you could go via Plunket - could your PN refer you to a paed, or could they suggest a good GP that might be helpful.

    Author: Erika
Subject: 39629
Posted: 19 June 2011 at 8:06pm

Thank you so much guys for your responses.

Susieq - we are in Ellerslie, so somewhere around Ellerslie towards Pakuranga way. I grew up in Howick and my mother lives there (i visit her all the time) so even out that way i would consider.

Nikki - you are right the GP's really do just deal with the basics! I guess i just don't know what type of specialist to get referred to regarding the baby not eating.

AandCsmum - thanks heaps! I didn't mention about intolerances but that is what we believe our 2 year old to have. We think it manifests as constipation - we have no rashes, laboured breathing etc that the allergy reaction does. We have been seeing a great natropath for the last 4 months and the #2 issues plus a few others have gotten massively better. We had a hair test done and it showed intolerance to dairy (quite high) and wheat (lower) but we have cut both out and in addition to herbs, probiotics, fish oils etc, have got her a lot better, but she still has the terrible issue with going #2 even though it is not rock hard anymore. She holds it in, refuses to squat- stands straight up with butt cheeks clenched and it's just soul destroying to see the process of her trying to pass a bowel motion. It can take up to a day. Her body says expell it, but her mind says no and she stops it and fights it and howls with pain too. So this is the ongoing issue with 2 year old.

9 month old i fear may have issues with diary too, although not diagnosed. We use the Novalac formula and stage 1 was fine. Switched to stage 2 at 6 months and bang - constipation, awful struggling. Rang the company after about 6 weeks and found out that the stage 2 had a higher casien content. Have gone back to Stage 1 and much better. Not amazing but much improved.
It's just the food issue with her. She does take food occasionally, but usually only the first 2 mouthfuls and then no more! Most of the time she gags on it as if it is just SO revolting and will most often vomit it back up anyway. She is a tiny wee thing, we are on about the 3rd percentile for age on the plunket scale. I am just worried she will fall off the graph and also missing nutrients and other things you get from eating food. (Jaw movement, tummy processing and breaking things down etc etc)

Thanks ladies. Any other comments would be well received. Will contact Anna Richards too.

Kind regards,

Erika
