Any kind of procedure which involves contact with blood or bodily fluids requires strict adherence to cross-contamination prevention. Piercing guns are usually made with plastic and cannot be sterilized in an autoclave. Sure, they wipe it with alcohol or antiseptic in between uses, but how sterile is that?... A quick wipe with a sterile pad is not effective in removing disease-carrying blood.

Some will argue that the piercing gun never comes in contact directly with the customer's skin. This might be true, but the piercers hands do - if they touch the customers skin and then touch the gun, the gun is now contaminated. Period. And when the gun drives the stud through the flesh, if the skin starts to bleed there is no way of knowing whether or not tiny particles of blood could have been dispersed into the air contaminating everything around it. (From here )

I guess because I have had bad experiences with the gun, I am very wary of them now. When I got my ears pierced when I was small, they were placed very unevenly, and when I got them redone in my teens (I got two in each ear at various stages), they all got horribly infected.

Edited for excessive use of the word "very".

Edited by MissShell

Where i worked we were OTT with keeping the area sterile and clean and i can imagine places are not as careful so i guess shop around is the key, i have 3 ear peircings all done by gun never infected had my belly button done by needle and got the worst infection had to get the wound drained and have no peircing anymore.

A lot of my friends had theirs done from about 6-8 years old and I begged and begged to get mine done. My grandma had said to wait until I was 13 as she got hers done then and so did my mum but in the end I got them done at 10. I personally won't be getting DDs done until she is around that age too and asks for it. I do know a few people who have done it for religious reasons though.

After 2 years I got feed up with irritations as a result and they grew over. I don't understand why a 2 year old would need their ears done, as surely they wouldn't be wanting this themselves? It seems a bit grown up for a toddler.

Edited by millymollymandy

They're inaccurate, they make a loud (scary) noise and half the time they don't go all the way through. Piercing with a needle is by far and beyond the best way to go, but that means going to a professional piercer and a lot of them won't pierce that young. Its up to you what you do of course but theres my 2c.
