I got mine done at 5. My Daughter (3.5years) was asking to have hers done and after explaining what would happen and telling her that it was going to hurt she still wanted it done. Both ears done at the same time with guns. No infections or anything and she is very happy to have them done. I also got my ears done at 2 by a gun ( obviously that was years ago when things were way less sterile!),   never ever have had a problem with them and to be honest after not wearing earrings for 5 years they never closed up :)

I was not allowed my ears done & I did them myself when I was a teenager & then I got them done professionally..I have had them done 2x in each ear & have not worn ear rings for yrs now as cheap ones hurt my ears & dangly ones got pulled by babies, so just don't bother now which is funny as I used to buy new ones every pay day lol.

Got my ears peirced when I was two with a gun and i'm still cool infact they have NEVER closed up and I can go months with out wearing ear rings. Only time they get infected is when I wear fake silver or gold.

I know there are places here in NP that do it, cos i've seen little kids with them done.

Jazzy, my friend still got her little boy's ear done when he was about 15months

Anyway, cole88, ring around in the area and see who will do it for you then you could go check the place out before deciding on getting her ears done there to see what their hygene standards look like.

I personally have only had my ears done about 6 times and always with a gun. Oh, had my nose once that was with a needle and it closed up a few months later when my stud fell out. Anyway... Good luck x

A lot of piercing shops get a bad rep, so they are extra-pedantic when it comes to make sure everything is beyond clean, as to not give anyone any ammo.

I probably would think it would be better (safer, more hygienic, etc) to be done at a piercing shop as I am sure they are a lot more stricter than a pharmacy but that's just me. More experience, more knowledge...

I am in the if you don't like what someone HAS said then just ignore it. Guess not everyone can do that though.

Pudgy i can imagine some people are well trained with their guns but their are still so many things wrong with them - i will link articles if anyone (esp Cole88 who might be curious about what is going to be going into her daughters ears) are interested. Not starting a campaign or anything here people, just sharing the word. I myself got my first ear piercing with a pharmacy gun but as i went on to get a further 50 odd piercings i learnt the error of my way. Professionals despise them. See this what is wrong wifh OB these days. Everyone is so worriwd about the reactions of others they don't feel comfortable sharing teir honest views.

For those of you saying people are "judging" I haven't seen one post saying that what she is doing is terrible and how could she do it. All I see are opinions and advice against why it shouldn't be done.   Saying that we are all judging is a cop out. If You posted a topic and people reacted the same way , are you going to take it personally every ime ? If so maybe this isnt the place for you.

What you should remember is that everyone has a different way of communicating and you cant add tone into a written post. What I see are whole lot of ladies concerned about the op daughter for various reasons and they are voicing those.

I do agree with you that places will definitely vary in cleanliness and that it's a great idea to shop around for that reason! After all, it is rather hard to keep an area and all equipment 100% sterile, so some will be better at it than others.

However, I just wanted to expand on the non-sterility of guns:

The first concern when it comes to piercing is sterilization. Any kind of procedure which involves contact with blood or bodily fluids requires strict adherence to cross-contamination prevention. Piercing guns are usually made with plastic and cannot be sterilized in an autoclave. Sure, they wipe it with alcohol or antiseptic in between uses, but how sterile is that?... A quick wipe with a sterile pad is not effective in removing disease-carrying blood.

Some will argue that the piercing gun never comes in contact directly with the customer's skin. This might be true, but the piercers hands do - if they touch the customers skin and then touch the gun, the gun is now contaminated. Period. And when the gun drives the stud through the flesh, if the skin starts to bleed there is no way of knowing whether or not tiny particles of blood could have been dispersed into the air contaminating everything around it. I guess because I have had bad experiences with the gun, I am very wary of them now. When I got my ears pierced when I was small, they were placed very unevenly, and when I got them redone in my teens (I got two in each ear at various stages), they all got horribly infected.

i understand your comments totally but It does depend on who does it because the gun should not make any contact with the ear and self-contained disposable cartridges are used for the gun - so therefore are alot more sterile then you would think, if they were not sterile enough to meet health standards they would not be used. I agree with bowie, it needs to be done with a needle not guns.

I got mine done at 10 with a gun, and they were constantly infected for a year. I took them out to let them be treated properly and ended up having to go get them repericed by a huge diameter needle with special gunk on it to clean out the hole track in my hear and them put keepers (ring ones) in to get them to heal, the hole from the huge needle closed over to the diameter of the keeper, but as a result I can only wear keepers, studs make my ears instantly go infected as they re'perice a straight hole through my ear rather than follwing the curve shaped track I have.
(I wanted to leave them unpierced after getting the gunk put through but it was deemed I had to get the keepers in as otherwise my ear lobes with heal with huge lumps of scared cartilage stuff at the front and back and look worse off)

I agree. I would never get my girls ears done before the age of 10 but thats my choice. Who am i to judge if someone else wants to get there childs done before that.

I think its one of those topics that are going to get out of hand anyhow.

But if you do want to get your girls ears done thats your choice. I got mine pierced when I was 6yrs with the gun and I would not get mine done with one again, yes I did want my ears pieced but I had no idea how it happened, I will never get anything pierced again. wasnt the piecing of the ears that puts me off I just think that gun is un needed a needle would have been much better. I would wait til they are old enough to decide and understand what has to happen.

Both my girls got their ears pierced for their 6th birthdays, it was part of their present.
They did ask for them to be done earlier but i said No.

I won't be getting DD's done until she asks. In saying that though did you know its common practice in Czech to get them done at birth, it comes as one of the checks that get done. (An aquaintance is Czech and we were talking about it one day) The view is that ear piercings are viewed as pretty and they want their girls to be pretty, and get them done at birth or not soon after.

She got her girl done at 8weeks or something she had to hunt down a chemist that would do it.
My piece of advice make sure you get someone who uses two guns at the same time. Sorry but I'm going to jump on the band wagon as well. I won't be getting either of my daughters ear pieced until at least 10 and only if they ask for it and what I consider grown up enough to have them.

Personally I think it's looks trashy on a toddler. From about 6years I think they look nice.

Of course it's just another parenting issue that every parent has an opinion about but I hope you've stopped and really thought about.

Agree. A lot of my friends had theirs done from about 6-8 years old and I begged and begged to get mine done. My grandma had said to wait until I was 13 as she got hers done then and so did my mum but in the end I got them done at 10. I personally won't be getting DDs done until she is around that age too and asks for it. Personally I wouldn't do until she was older and could ensure that she was able to look after cleaning etc. I didn't have mine done till I was 19 and my aunt goaded me into it, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. After 2 years I got feed up with irritations as a result and they grew over. I don't understand why a 2 year old would need their ears done, as surely they wouldn't be wanting this themselves? It seems a bit grown up for a toddler.

Just my opinion here and feel free to ignore - but piercing guns are bad and do a heck of a lot of damage, they're unsterile and often used by the girl who sells makeup at the pharmacy. They're inaccurate, they make a loud (scary) noise and half the time they don't go all the way through. Piercing with a needle is by far and beyond the best way to go, but that means going to a professional piercer and a lot of them won't pierce that young. As far as i know not many places will do childrens ears under 6 years anymore. I will probably get them done for her 5th birthday if she chooses so she understands on how to look after them. I was about 10 when I got them done and got that badly infected that the dr told me I had to wait until I was a lot older I think I was about 16 when I got them done again then a few years later I decided to have the second one. I haven't had any more problems after that.
