My aunt had children later and Mum went to stay for a week each time she had her 3 kids. My sister came to me for 2 weeks when DS2 was born but she's child-free and able to do what she likes at the moment

If the shoe was on the other foot, I would try go for a week but I'm in another country (9hr flight away atm) and I know my DH would be fine with the boys that long. Would more be a matter of could he take the time off work. I think planned in advance enough it would be OK.

So yeah, if you're close to your sister and you want to be there I'd say go for as long as your DH can be away from work! It would depend on the relationship you have with your sister. If it is a good one and your DH can cope with you gone for a while go for as long as you can.

I was thinking maybe a long weekend...with either Friday and/or Monday depending on the father's annual leave situation...

It's probably different for everyone, but I would go down for just the weekend or whenever is suitable so DH didn't have to take much time off work.

When I had DD my sister came over to Nelson from Perth for about 2 weeks but she was all over the place and not staying with us. just curious if your sister lived on the other island to you (so you had to fly down) and you were goign to visit her new baby how long would you go down for?
