The more overdue I get the more panicy I get about it, fingers crossed this bub arrives soon!

Anyone got any tips for an irritating neighbour, he saw my midwives car here the other day and thought I was having the baby so came round, he doesnt go to the front door he comes down the side of the house and round the back...where the pool will be. I find him creepy at the best of times and told him i didnt want him round but he came round again and did the same thing when DH got home. We have curtains but I dont see why I should have to have everything shut just because he's wierd, I'm worried about when I'm breastfeeding too that he'll do the same thing.

With my first I was four days early so I'm presuming this will be mean I'm early this time too...but I guess you never can tell!

That sounds like your midwife is pretty helpful as far as supplying things. We're planning to have the bed set up to birth on, as well as the pool, just in case I change my mind. I also got a hypnobirthing book but so far have found it more like an advert for the courses and not very well written. Are there any things you found helpful for preparing?

Thanks Lisame for the suggestion about the energy advice org, will maybe see how our trial run goes and give them a call if we run out really quickly.

I'm due 15th July so we cant be far away from each other timewise!
I'm planning my homebirth but am feeling slightly underplanned. Asked my midwife what I would need and her list was old towels and sheet and nice towels for bubs, a hot water bottle and airer for infront of the fire to warm up babies clothes and towels and an icecream container for the placenta!

She says they bring everything else, I have the choice of two pools, one inflatable and one bigger one with metal stand, she thinks I might like this one as it is deeper and I am tall. She seems to think our hotwater cyclinder will cope with filling it.

I love her attitude and am really looking forward to meeting our long awaited miracle bubs! Thanks for the advice on birthing mats, I've gone with an old queen size duvet outer with newspaper and cardboard sewn in for absorbency and an old duvet inner for comfort. We have a big mattress I can have on the floor and have got a waterproof bedpad thing that I plan on having on my bed as I get closer in case my waters break but can then use on the other mattress on the floor or wherever I end up.

So very excited and just keeping my fingers crossed that bubs remains well and we get to have our wish of birthing at home!

Just something padded on the floor (like a foam mattress or something) covered in plastic or newspaper with a sheet over it or something. Or just the bed.

We're just in Auckland. I'd done a bit of googling about hiring a califont but nothing much came up. Is there somewhere in particular to look? I can't see them being any cheaper than an urn and they were going to be a bit pricey (given that you'd want them for a couple of weeks before just in case).

I haven't seen a pace to hire a califont although I've looked into urns but they're too expensive. Especially for number 1 - I don't want to try for a number two at all due to my troubles so far, and so I don't want to "have a hospital birth this time and see how it goes and have a HB next time"

Lucky I laboured for 24 hours before we transferred cos it took a few hours to fill. Second time round we hired a califont from the home birth association. We did a practice run where it took an hour or so to figure out how to get it going, and then timed how long it took to fill the pool. Lucky we'd done the practice cos the actual labour was pretty quick. I think we started it filling just after 5am, I hopped in at 6 while it was still filling and some time after that DH turned the tap off. I was a bit beyond caring by then So with the califont, it was easy. Without, I wouldn't do it again.

Pepi, I live on the other side of the Manawatu gorge to the nearest hospital. The gorge closed when I was 32 weeks and suddenly my 25-30 minute trip to hospy became 45-50 minutes. In the end we decided we were ok with that, but it's personal choice really. You need to own your decisions and be comfortable with them. I do believe there is a lot to be said for instinct - yours and your MW's

With my first I was very happy being 5 minutes away from hospital. With this, my second, we are at least 30 minutes away from hospital and I"m happy with that. I don't know how I would do with 70 mins away but at the end of the day I HATE hospitals so would probably delay until it was too late... hehe

AT the end of the day you can't eliminate all risks, even if you birth at hospital so you just need to comfortable with the risks you are taking (and I"m not saying homebirth is risky - I don't believe that at all).

Good luck! And that if there were complications we should know well in advance. I figure that a helicopter to hospital is probably quicker than an ambulance even if our home is 20mins further from the hospital than the birthing centre.

Obviously we'll need to assess the decision as the pregnancy progresses, buy I just feel that a HB is what I've always wanted. I'm a little scared in case something went wrong, but think with the very experienced HB midwife plus my own instincts, we should know if it's the right decision for us at the time

What do others think about this given our distance from hospital? We are 20 mins out of warkworth, and warkworth is approx 50mins from North Shore Hospital. Would you do it f you were healthy and had normal pregnancy???

Thanks for reading and hopefully commenting!

I've told a select few people that wasn't how we'd hoped it would go, but for the most part they assume we'd planned a hospital birth and I don't correct them.

This time round, the photos I showed people showed us with a new baby (bub dressed by then though) sitting on our couch with DD1. Some people asked if she was a homebirth and I confirmed, but several others said things like "boy, they kick you out quick these days don't they?" and I've had great delight in saying, "oh I wouldn't know, I had her in the dining room" (works even better if they happen to be in the dining room and then you can say "I had her right were you are sitting", hehe). Most of them don't know what to say at that point!

But the stink thing is now people know we are homebirthers, so it'll be common knowledge before we have number 3 and I kinda wish it wasn't. I quite liked not having everyone pass judgement on it beforehand! Afterwards, when it clearly went fine, you can see they want to criticise but can't really find anything to say.

I'm so glad this thread is still going

I had written lists for each person on what I wanted them to do during the labour/birth and the midwife explained how a homebirth would work, the safety procedures for me and baby etc, and after that Mum and DH were totally behind me.
We did not tell me inlaws we wre planning a homebirth and wont be this time either- we didnt end up birthing at home last time due to muconium in the waters, but hopefully all goes well this time and then the inlaws and all DH's family can find out after the fact!

And so far, so good!

I live with my mum (I'm single, so doing it alone) and although I think she's not thrilled with the idea, she's slowly coming around. Booked in with my last midwife today.
I wopuld highly recommend reading the Hypnobirthing Book by Marie Mongan- I think it it. As well as breathing/hypno birthing techniques it talks a lot about natural birth, and birth being a natural thing that doenst need to be complicated or medicalised, and I found the list for a birth plan really really good. I also have a good resouce on accurpressure techinques if anyone would like me to email it.

As its my first my partner & mama are adamant there's to be no HB for the first go. I remember afterwards looking around and thinking "how did all that get here?!" I was well into labour land by the time she arrived though.

I lost about 700ml of blood my first labour I think, and had really heavy post-partum bleeding for weeks and some awful post-partum clots too. It was a vonteuse/episiotomy with ecbolics to deliver the placenta. This time, I had no tearing worth mentioning, and we waited an hour and half for the placenta to come naturally and I lost 125ml of blood, and my bleeding had reduced to a trickle by day 3 pp. I'm sure letting the placenta take it's time made a difference. As did the major reduction in trauma to my poor uterus and nether regions. But definitely talk to your MW and see what she says.
