Look particularly at any special stitches it can do and tricks like buttonholing or zipper foot if you like sewing those kind of things. Try it in the shop and think about the kinds of things you would most likely be wanting to sew.

Have a good old shop around first. I have a Singer Confidence 7470 (i think) QT, which means it comes with the extension table - but then I sew for a living.
One thing you wanna research is how much the accessories are for the machine you want. example - if your machine doesnt come with a walking foot, but you want one, is it going to cost you $200 etc.

    Author: jazzy
Subject: 38161
Posted: 25 February 2011 at 4:36pm

So I need a hobby & thought I might want to get back into sewing which I have not done in years. I don't like my old sewing machine...had to many drops, so need a new one.

I had a look in a sewing shop today & they showed me a Janome DC2101, it is on special for $669 on special. It has auto sewing so you don't need to use the foot & you can program in stitches & it looked so cool & simple. They have sewing classes as well & are very helpful. I said I was not getting one till end of May when DS3 starts school & she said they do lay-by & are not strict on it so DH said to do one so I will look at doing it next week.

The customer service & lessons if needed & the fact they can arrange servicing & repairs is an added bonus.

Also on the info sheet she gave me it has a bonus extention table , walking foot & seam foot, so I take it they are free with it.

Just interested if anyone has used this type & what to look out for when buying a sewing machine
