Author: jazzy
Subject: 37767
Posted: 30 January 2011 at 3:14pm

With 3 boys we have way too much stuff & I notice they turn lots of toys into weapons, items we have spent $$ on are no longer a phone or cash registers they are weapons of mass destruction.

I have sold good ones on TM & donated or given away others.

DS2&3 are mad on stuffed toys which drives me nuts as there are so many of them, I am trying to put them away so they will forget about the ones that have no meaning....lost cause at the moment..

Send out an email to people who usually buy toys & say you are trying to build up an account for him & instead of presents of toys which he has way too many of, it would be really great if they could contribute to that instead...you could say you are using it as bike fund or a pre-school activity, swimming lessons etc.

Storage ideas, if you can fit bins under beds or stack them in a wardrobe then they are out of sight. We have shelves in the laundry where I keep a few toys & the art box, the kids can reach them & know to put them back there. I have 2 sets of 3 blue plastic draws in there also & each draw has a certain set of toys in it like toy story, lego, cars, trains etc & they are the ones that are played with the most, so easy to put away & keep tidy. We try & have the toys put away at night so the living room is not 1 big toy room.

DS1 has a bookcase & desk in his room & keeps toy on there & in his wardrobe but it has to be tidy.

DS2&3 have 2 toy barrels, a couple of boxs, big plastic set of 3 draws & shelves for books (I so need to get in there & sort it out).

We have a storage cupboard where I store games.

I get rid of broken toy when they don't know & I sort out toys when they are not around.

A family member often gives me crap, toys that are nearly broken or are, clothes that stiff & have holes in as she gives all her good stuff to friends so I throw them in the bin...if the kids don't see them.

For me life runs smooth when there is not clutter & if I don't have to sort out mountains of stuff, like toys & paper. Sometimes I am so temped to stick the stuff lying around in a big bag & throw it away looking forward to the inorganic rubbish collection lol

    Author: ginger
Subject: 37767
Posted: 30 January 2011 at 10:39am

Be brutal. Generally we all only use a portion of our stuff regularly, and the rest is just using space - clothes, shoes, toys, linen ... all sorts! I'm really brutal - I can't stand tripping over things and not being able to find stuff. Cuinn has one toy box that I don't let overflow and one drawer under his bed for soft toys. That's it. Oh, and a standard sized bucket of lego. He looks in the drawer under his bed about once a month, and otherwise, just faffs around in his toy box or outside. He's got a bit of stuff outside - a kids wheelbarrow, a climbing frame, a rocking thing, but I'm of the opinion that the house is our house too and I like to be able to have my space as well.

I say be absolutely brutal. Watch him for a few days or a week, see what he's playing with and what he's not and just box stuff up and store it. Same goes with your own stuff - clothes you hardly wear, linen you don't use (we have 3 sets of sheets (for summer and winter, so 6 in total) for example - 2 we rotate on our bed and one on the guest bed) and just pretty much everything - it'll help you create space in cupboards and in your own areas as well and hopefully that'll help! You'll have to be brutal though!

DS is 19 months and for storage we have a couple of book cases and 4 large toy chests (scattered around the house). I do like the idea of having some plastic drawers from warehouse in the cupboard and about storage under the bed. A lot of the toys have been given to him so I struggle taking any away but this is ridiculous. We have a large garage so a lot of this stuff will have to go down there. AND don't even get me started on my DH he has just as many toys! I'm sure I don't have anything of mine in this house. Quite frankly I would love a 4 bedroom house with 2 living areas. I'll keep pushing DH on this idea.

We stopped buying toys for the kids as they tend to get enough from friends/family for xmas/birthday, and now that I'm 'de-cluttering' again to make room for new baby in 3rd bedroom, I'm amazed at how little they have, compared to when it was just DS and me I would suggest putting toys he rarely plays with in a box and store in garage if possible, and bring a couple of toys out from that box on rainy days, or when you are busy with new baby, he'll think its a new toy all over again!
