DH is 1 of 3 boys, he has 4 boys, his 2 brothers have 4 girls & 1 boy between them.

In our family (on my mother's side) we have 16 (soon to be 17) girls and one boy... I was reading articles on this prior to having children. I have a medical background so these studies were all medical journal published.

I find it iinteresting that most studeis focus on producing boys!

I read a great study that suggested that although the first time you conceive you have a 50/50 chance of having either sex, if you have a boy first time your chances are then 51/49 of having a boy a second time, and it keeps going. This study focussed on boys so not sure its the same for girls.

Also read a study similar to sqishy mums one about woman working in male dominated environments tend to have higher testerone which leads to them producing boys. As a side note, I work in a boys school which also has a high level of males teachers. All the female staff that conceived while teaching at the school had boys except one who tested for other reasons and its howed she had very high levels of oestrogen.

Another study I read which I don't belive but gave me a giggle was that if a woman has all boys she has a higher chance of one being gay...reallly, stats would have shown that! We used to take the pi** out of a friend as he could only produce girls and we would say he wasn't man enough to produce boys - some people I still think this is actually true for. My mum couldn't carry boys, so she says. She had a misscarriage between my 2 younger sisters and is sure it was a boy. I had boys I think I couldn't carry girls as when I had a MC I was sure it was a girl. I am sure it is one of those OWT's that we will never know. However we will still take the pi** out of our friend.

I find this all very curious too. I'm pg with our 5th girl. A lot of ppl say it must be time for a boy but reality seems to indicate that you have three shots and that's almost it. I know a few women who have always m/c boys and only carried girls to term, so I wonder if there may be some incompatability. But it's only guesses. I have my 4yr old asking me for a baby sister, he has 3 brothers and a half sister, I told him he already has a sister but he said noo a baby sister, im like sory hunny mummy only makes boy babys ask daddy.

of course a girl would be lovely but i doubt it will happen.

Hmm something I read the other day, apparently the sperm have an electrical charge, one slightly positive the other slightly negative. The egge can change polarity and therefore "chooses" which one it wants to fertilise it! Just thought you guys might find that interesting. The men shoot em up and the egg chooses :P

A wee bit OT but from what I can recall from my reading on Henry VIII and the whole Tudor thing - a lot of his issues with fertility were because he had syphillus... and subsequently passed this onto his progeny because he also infected his wives.

Just coming in on the ivf question and sex selecting.

The only way it would ever be considered in selecting the sex is if it there was a genetic disorder with having either boy or girl in the family. When falling pregnant with ivf you still won't know the actual sex until the 20 week scan like all other couples.

Thats what I always thought! and I like that idea ... that its entirely up to the man, but then every pregnancy book I have read says that it also depends what chromosome the mother is favoring at that time, and that it can be influenced by diet etc
Typical,the books can't just let the man take responsibility for something

My DH is one of 4 boys,this baby is a girl

Basically, its up to both parents, the male produces the sperm ,but it also depends on what the mother is "favouring " at that time, X or Y.

I don't know, I have a girl, and a boy, and im UTD with another girl, I didn't do anything special for any of them, just had sex,didn't plan it or time it to be a few days before ovulation etc, hell my first wasn't planned at all.
But I always knew I would have girl boy girl, and what do you know? I was right

I have 3 boys, my husband is one of 2 boys and I have 2 sisters.  My dads one of 5 boys and has one sister and my cousins are mostly girls!  Go figure!  I am pretty sure if I had a number 4 it would be boy number 4!

LOL to this, funnily enough my DP comes from a family of 4 boys. So this should be true for him right? my husband has 1 brother

his brother has 2 sons

my husband's dad has 2 brothesr and 1 sister one of his brothers is gay and they ahve no children his other brother has 2 sons. his sister has 1 of each.

our daughter was the first born girl (with DH's last name) since 1949.

Hmm this is interesting a friend and i have been discussing how to get the opposite sex she has 3 boys and i have 2 girls next time we have said we should just swap lol.
Im not sure many would discribe me as quiet/shy yet i only have girls.

Im just starting to read up on all the old wifes tales on how to help get a particular sex.
I have a friend who has 6 girls! but from 2 different fathers she just tells everyone she only makes girls.

well DH has a girl from a previous relationship and together we have 4boys.

I think DH is the one wanting a girl more than i am.

we are planning to ttc evenually, but i have given up on trying for a girl, we didnt really do anything to "sway" for a girl with any of our boys.

I know someone who had a boy, then years later got together with another guy and went on to have 5 girls! Technically I think you CAN sex-select via IVF as you can do other types of genetic testing once the embryo gets to the 8 cell stage (I think)
It would just be a case of taking one of the cells and DNA testing it to determine gender then implanting only embryos of the desired gender.

I always thought that it was based on the father and he was from a family of mostly/all boys you'd most likey mirror it with your kids. Kylie, thats true in principal, however, the x-carrying and the y-carrying sperm are very slightly different - that's the basis for *drafting* them in the semen sexing machines they have for bulls (so you can order a boy or a girl calf when you inseminate your cows), so in the same way, they can respond differently to different uterine environments. Not sure how true this is but a guy at work told me ( and really it was TMI from a guy I one work with and 2 has kids my age ) that when he was Lincoln Uni many many years ago and they were doing progeny testing on bulls as you do, they decided to test themselves. Anyway his was that he was unlikely to have daughters and he didn't just 3 boys.

Isnt there something about boy sperm being slower and stronger and girl sperm being quicker so if you BD a few days before ovulation the boy sperm will be alive swimming onwards to get the egg but if you BD on the day of ovulation the girl sperm will beat the boy to the egg?

Or am i crazy? I dont believe in the woman determining the sex. Guys have a 50/50 mix of X and Y sperm as sperm are basically 1/2 of a normal cell, so from each sex cell you get 1 X and 1 Y. You have a 50% chance of having a girl/boy per pregnancy so if you have four kids there is a 6% chance of having all girls or all boys assuming that there is no genetic problems. It is possible if the female has problems with one or both of her X chromosomes that boys are not viable since they dont have the back up X that girls have. Which can reduce the chance of a boy to about 12.5%.

ive heard about some 'study' done... where it tends to be the woman that determines boy/girl.... a 'dominant and assertive (they said bossy) woman' is more likely to have male children as the testosterone in the sperm with the testerone released in the egg by the dominant woman will likely create a male. whereas a timid/shy/less assertive woman is more likely to have a girl (something about evolution and men wearing the pants)

so you hear of couples where they have all boys or all girls eg 5 boys or 4 girls etc.

and yets despite trying all the so called methods to get a particular gender they always end up with the same gender.

so I am wonder if it is possible that a man could carry mostly X sperm or Y sperm. so that no matter which method they try they will always get the same gender
