Paws, why don't you wait until they're 13 and then give them the option: safe sex or circumcision LOL

I think it used to be reasonably commonly done 20-30 years ago as a hygiene thing. I think the whole thing sounds horrible, especially for a little baby (but then I find heel pricks hard!). I wouldn't do it, unless as they got older it seemed necessary (like in the examples above of 7 and 8 yo's). It just sounds cruel and unnecessary.

I had heard that taking away the foreskin can make the nerve endings de-sensitised over time and therefore sex less pleasurable for them later on.
We wouldn't get it done- mainly because the poor kid would get teased so much. Kids pick on anything that is different and hardly any NZ kids have it done now days. this is so werid to read...I worked for Jewish families in Usa...and their sons are done early on - normally shortly after birth to about 6 months...and it is done in the home, by a rabbi in front of all family and friends...and is called a Bris....a huge party follows and i saw no child afterwards with any infections or after effects....all jewish males have it done. Funny how here it is a major surgery yet a rabbi can do it in five minutes in a loungeroom!!!

I did know a child in NZ who had to have one done around age 8 due to an infection and he suffered horrendously from the infection before and the pain afterwards.

Im not jewish and neither is DH - but he is circumsized and altho i missed the herald and the doco he saw it and told me he would want it done if it was a boy...i agree with him. my son hasn't had it done - nor did Ieven think about it when he was born. as most have said they don't do it unless for religious reasons or medical, if you just want it done you have to pay for it yourself. Me and Dh have discussed this and DH was wanting it done if we had a boy but I don't want to put baby thru this. On the other trend I think it had pictures of it being done. interesting, if I was a guy I would probably prefer I was circumsised but obviously I have no first hand experience, just personal preference. I wonder if many guys get it done later in life because they would prefer it, kind of like a cosmetic thing. Then again most guys hate to think of a knife going anywhere near that region they probably wouldnt be keen..... just rambling now, thinking out loud.... must be quiet (Im bored can you tell)

DH has already informed me that if we ever have a boy he is NOT getting it done under any circumstance unless it is absolutely deemed necessary. I have just spoken to a friend of mine who has twin boys and she said that unless there is a medical reason to get one done they don't do the procedure. My friends partners son (did ya follow that hehe) had it done recently and I think he is about 7 due to medical reasons and yeah he was really sore etc but was old enough to understand why and it was better than what he has been going through without it being done. We didn't, but when I had Andrew the woman that was in the bed next to me was having it done to her boy. The only reason they will allow you to have it done is if you are Jewish (I think thats the religion) and can only be done in Wellington or Auckland (well we are in Palmy so she was probably just told that). Hubby and I talked very briefly about this before we knew what we were happening...we would not do it. To be honest I don't think it's necessary and from what I've read can be pretty traumatic for bubs.

I think most people these days only really do it for religious reasons.
