I am also a fan, I am bummed he resigned, breakfast certainly wont be the same without him! I do think he crossed the line though this time! Wonder how long before we see him back on tv again?

I'm a fan.
i think though that he should have his OWN show, or join one of the other 'comedy' news shows, so that people who enjoy his humour can watch it, and aren't just subjected to it through the morning news. I don't personally like him very much. Not so much because of his comments, but because he seems rather snarky & negative in general. However having never met it I don't dwell on those judgements too much as I have no idea what he is really like.

In terms of his comments, I always think you should judge something by its fruits. For example, does a comment unsettle people into stopping and thinking about a topic / reassessing their conclusions (which is a good thing) or is just plain nastiness that serves to purpose but to edify himself and tear others down? Challenging people to think and question is good but just squashing others down is totally unhelpful.

There's little doubt that the presenter role he was in required somone quick on their feet who would make people think. That is why he was hired. TVNZ would've known he'd push the envelope and that was what they wanted. Did he cross the line? Probably but the fact that the Indian govt got all up in arms seems a bit excessive to me. He is an individual with his own opinions, and although in his role he should've been more careful, NZ shouldn't be judged for one persons comments.

Should he have stayed? Again, not sure. I like Paul Henry...he made the breakfast programme worth watching...

With is comments on the GG it just made him look ignorant IMO...I heard the GG talking on the radio a few months ago and he has a kiwi accent and then when you see a pic of him is looks Indian...I just though obviously he was born in NZ cos is was GG but if you just saw him and hadnt heard him speak some may make the mistake he is Indian not NZ born...doesnt make you racist just uninformed...

as for the comments on Ms Dicksh*t...well anyone with a juvenile sense of humour laughs a bit each time they hear it, but it was inappropriate how he carried while on camera and the comments he made...

I think he should have apologized and been suspended but not have resigned...

I liked him, I thought he was funny but also thought he went well over the line with the comments re the GG. Haven't seen the video of the comments re the indian ladies name but rather than being racially motivated I would say it is more of a case of a little boy thinking someones name is funny.

I liked him. I didn't like those comments about the GG although I probably would have smirked at the Dixit or however it should be spelt episode. I'm not perfect. I don't think he should have lost his job whether he resigned or not over it all. Sad day for morning tv although it will mean that I can now get more done in the morning. Actually I understood what he was referring to. Leading up to the Commonwealth Games everyone was appalled at the standards in Delhi, and Paul had commented on the state of the streets in Delhi. So when he referred to India he was talking about the state of the streets: "It's true isn't it, Sheila Dik in Sh*t"...

He has crossed the line several times & has not had his facts right. So he has set himself up as a target & it almost looks like he has been trying to see how far he can go or get away with.

Really does the opinion person really matter? And sometimes I downright disagree with him and wish he wasn't so buddy-buddy with John Key... but he's still so interesting to listen to, and entertaining. And human. Instead of presenters who come across as cardboard cut-outs with lips that move.

I think it is such a shame, sometimes his comments make me wince, but he was so refreshing to watch in this too-PC world. I've read a lot (in loads of different places) over the last few days about professionalism and representation and so forth but if you read his statement the way I did, he was employed to be a little on the controversial side, a little irreverent, a lot entertaining, to gain momentum for the show, to create a "water cooler" moment each day. Sadly in doing what he was employed to do he may have just raised heckles a little much and bought it all to a head.

Just imagine if the media hype over him had been put to some use - in my mind it was an absolute waste of time and resources that could have been better spent.

I am disappointed and sooo angry that it's come to this. I have written TVNZ an email and commented on the Breakfast page but I guess it won't do any good if we all protest? Although, from what I've read no one really watched Breakfast except to see Paul Henry so really the ratings will drop and they might end up canning it - I hope so! I hope Paul Henry pops up on one of the other channels... and if he does, I'll be watching!

What a load of hoo-ha over such a thing! Talk about over-reacting NZ!

I like Paul Henry, and hope to see him back on Breakfast. For the most part I find him entertaining, and like the chemistry between him and Pippa.

Having said that, I think in both of these incidents he took things too far. The comments were juvenile and hurtful. But I also think it is a symptom of him being 'allowed' to say what he wants for so long. Personally I was disappointed in his comments.

I was also disappointed that John Key brushed it off at the time! He made no comment that it was inappropriate at all.

Paul Henry is a very good journalist and at the other end of the spectrum he is professional and appropriate. In his Breakfast role he is fulfilling a 'persona' - I am sure his behaviour is genuine (as in, he is a natural clown), but he does know how he should behave in situations, so in this case he should have known better.

I agree also though that there is so much more going on in our country that people just don't get passionate about. Sign of the times?

Hone Harawera answers to his electorate, they are the ones who voted him in, and unfortunetly for the Maori party if they ditched him they would probably lose that seat. So they most likely don't sack him to benefit themselves as a party.

And I guess again that the public has elected Len Brown in whatever he did (wouldn't have a clue about this one) so again the public has chosen.

Delli, while the MPs and Mayor are not employed by TVNZ - they are employed by us the people that vote, and by the Government and the point is this:

1) There hasn't been nearly as much of an outcry or public backlash towards Harawera or MPs etc. using their business credit cards for personal use eg. travel. In fact, it seems that the public have elected Len Brown who is guilty pretty much of theft. Double standards right there.

2) We would expect the Government to have higher standards than TVNZ. So why is the Government not expecting more from their MPs and Mayors and Council members? I would have thought that NOT making very racist comments and NOT stealing at the taxpayer's expense would be a fairly reasonable expectation - don't you?! Why has the Government or Party members not suspended or fired these individuals?

And yes, the Government owns TVNZ and expects it to be run professionally, upholding Broadcasting standards. It's a pity those standards don't seem to be consistent with our national leaders! Double standards again.

ETA: If you can't laugh at Sheila Diksh*t (we can't even write the poor woman's name in full because it's a swear word) then you're probably taking life too seriously.

Sorry just jumped to the last page in this discussion so not sure if anyone has made the following points but this is what i think:

On the Sheila Diks*it issue, there was a radio interview with her from a couple of years ago and she was asked how to pronounce her surname and yes she pronounced it dick sh*t so i think although juvenile of Paul Henry to laugh, many people did. I first heard it on the radio and all the presenters were having a good giggle over it.

Also i think what was worse than Paul Henrys remarks about the Govenor General was that John Keys didn't challenge it and nip it in the bud, he just glossed over it. Not something a Prime Minister should do IMO.

The one occasion I had a thought about the governer general I also wondered why we had a foreign person in office so no problem with Paul Henrys little convo bout that.

As for the Diksh*t thing mmm inappropriate for tv yeah but a slap on the wrist and a firm 'no' would have solved this. Its ridiculous the hoorah going on. India is filthy (you only have to check out the lead-up to the commonwealth games) so its not like he was saying anything thats not true about watching where you walk.

Based on Paul Henry's recent comments, I have to disagree with this

He certainly wasn't knowledgeable about the Governor-General (and the fact that he was born and bred in NZ) and I'm not sure what is so knowledgeable about his comment:

It's not "racism in reverse". It's racism, full stop. Sorry, nathansmummy - pet peeve of mine. I've heard people describe dark skinned people displaying racial discrimination against white skinned people as "reverse racism" a few times before - that is not correct. It's racism no matter what race the person making the racist remarks is!

I don't think TVNZ have any control over whether Len Brown or Hone Harawira are punished for anything they do - so don't see where the double standard is.

My opinion, he shouldn't have made the comments about the GG on national tv, because it was too open for interpretation. I mean, he says a lot of stuff tongue-in-cheek and that's how I saw it, but I also can understand how others it saw it as something he was actually serious about...

After it happened, he made a public apology to the GG, and tbh I don't understand why that wasn't the end of it?

I wonder how many people who label Paul Henry a racist, have never made any kind of racist remark in their lives (e.g. "F'n Asian drivers etc.. ), even jokingly, as I feel he was.

Also, I wonder how many people who are upset about the Dicksh*t comments were also upset about all the "Whakapapa" etc jokes used by Rove? Isn't that taking the piss as well?

I *love* Paul Henry... but I think he went too far. I'm glad he apologized but it's a shame it's now leaked as far as International waters, eg. India, Britain. It was definitely stupid. But people do say stupid things and I think the fuss is going a bit too far.

I am really sad that he won't be presenting "This is your Life". Paul Holmes is boring. And to be honest, almost all presenters on TV are boring... he's the only one remotely interesting to watch. Looking forward to when he's back! I like his non-PC approach but there's still a line and he definitely crossed it.

I don't think Paul Henry should have been suspended or fired. Simply because when he said the comments, TVNZ made the decision initially to let it go. So in my opinion, they made their decision about how they are going to deal with the comments. now everyone is getting up in arms, they are suspending, and some people are saying talking about firing him. They then aren';t firing him for what he said, but for what other people think. i think this is unfair. If the comments, in their eyes, were so offensive, he should have been sacked or reprimanded that day....not weeks (or days) later.

I agree Bizzy - I think he can be overly silly at times, but I really don't think he's racist. IMO, racist people don't tend to take the piss out of themselves, and PH does that. I think had someone in the news from any other country had a slightly funny name, he would have made fun of that too - indicating that he wasn't singling her out because of her nationality/race.

I do think he suffers from foot-in-mouth, and really needs to think things through before saying them sometimes, but the whole coverage/issue has been taken too far, and TBH I'm over hearing about it

Last week Paul Henry was defending the decision of Irene van Dyk to be flag bearer at the Commonwealth Games and his views then certainly didnt show him as racist.

He is right about india. It is virtually a slum, even Indians dont want to live there (as per the indian couple reported on here recently who are due to be deported).

How many people are still being discriminated against in NZ because of racist people? Which it seems there are a lot of in NZ...I always thought kiwis were better than that but it apparently not.

And race is just one issue.... does that mean that there are people out there who still think gay people are sick and that women can't do as good a job, or that a jewish person is only after money or a fat person is disgusting and greedy.

I love him I find him soooo entertaining. Sure some of his comments are a bit over the top but thats what makes him funny. Did anyone see Sheila Diksh*t say how her name is pronounced? It is actually dick-sh*t not dixit that the others on breakfast were saying. Isn't that kind of offensive? Pronouncing a name wrong on purpose because you are uncomfortable with how it sounds?

The governer general comment was a bit off but I do think it was more of a case of speaking before thinking and he got punished for that. What about our favourite MPs comments about how he would hate his children to go out with pakehas. To me that is along the same lines and he never got a punishment.

I wasn't so offended about him laughing at the name "Dicksh*t" (although it was mean). I was more offended that he implied that his derogatory comments were appropriate because she was indian.
