We overdo protein in the West anyway

I don't usually supplement iron except when pg and even then only sometimes. If you have a balanced diet then you'll get heaps from what you're eating....just about everything has iron in it, just some sources are better than others and vegetarians rely on non-haem sources rather than haem iron (which yo get from meat). But if you continue to eat dairy and eggs then I would be suprised if you needed to supplement. A good start would be to get your Dr to run a set of bloods so you know where you stand to start with

B12 is the other thing you need to keep an eye on but again, unless you're intending to become vegan then you'll get the minutae you need from dairy and eggs.

As for cutting it out, um...just cut it out lol. you do need to think outside the meat and 3 vege thing though. there's heaps of meat replacements (vege sausages, not-bacon etc) if that's your bag or you can go the whole hog hehe and just start learning how to use pulses and legumes etc. We are a vegetarian family and don't really eat much of the latter....but I love stuff like salsa bean nachos, hummus on toast, vege sausages in casseroles...etc etc.

I second that fab cook book Meals Without Meat. It's easy peasy stuff, not daunting at all.

Um can't help you with the issue of cooking it for DH cos I just don't...so my DF is vege by default lol.

But feel free to ask me any ?? cos I'd be happy to help

    Author: newme
Subject: 36017
Posted: 30 September 2010 at 8:23pm

I was a strict vegetarian for a number of years, but started eating meat again when pregnant the first time.

I think the best thing to do is go to the library and research on the internet - not just for meal ideas, but to understand what your body needs.

I found it really hard to give up meat - I grew up on a farm and we had meat every day, and to be honest I liked meat. So for the first year I would sometimes eat meat if I couldn't help myself. But then it became easier and easier to do without it. I ate a lot of lentils and pulses, as well as more veges and fruit.

I took iron supplements and zinc supplements (very important). But I found my my no 2's become more irregular when I was vegetarian. Maybe it was the iron pills.

Also make a recipe folder with vege recipes that you like and would make again - cos for a start it can be hard to come up with ideas. The Meals without meat book is really good, but there are plenty of great recipes online.

As far as he's concerned a meal isn't a meal without meat.

If you have?

We eat a lot of meat. TBH, I couldn't tell you the last time we had a vegetarian meal! I'm thinking about going vegetarian, but maybe not true vegetarian (EG restaurants etc I may still eat meat as it seems to make dinner choices SO much easier!!)

This is purely a healthy eating thing. I want to learn to eat a wider variety of foods, try new things, in general eat healthier as I know we don't eat enough veges.

Hoping it might help as I (WAY TMI!) often have a crook tummy, and can have a lot of trouble with #2's (very irregular) so am hoping the healthier diet will help.

So do you have any sites that would be worth reading?
How did you cut out the meat?
What do you substitute meat with?
I would want meals where I can still cook a side of meat for DH if necessary (TBH, can't see him wanting to join me...)
How do you make sure you get enough iron etc??
Also If you have any links to good recipe sites, that'd be fab!!!
