Sounds like the consensus is to not cut :-)

My DD (now 13) has very curly hair. It is tight ringlets at the back and underneath, and could be straight at the front and on top at times.

I let it grow and just tied it up at the top. I had it cut/tidied up when she was 3 or 4ish and it looked a bit scragly at the ends.

Because I had to tie it up so much, she got very good at sitting there and getting her hair done which was great. She never pulled out the clips and hair ties because she was so used to having them in there from early on.

I used the detangling spray to get through the knots and that worked well. Also I used to plait it after her bath so it wouldn't be tangled when she woke up in the morning.

Curly hair is so beautiful, but there are some challenges ahead (knots, nits etc).

I am so pleased that you asked that question Ange, Tessa's hair is very curly at the back and sometimes it is dead straight (like mine) on top and then the next it is curly, and now it is getting longer, I have been wondering what to do about it.
Everyone tells me not to cut it but she will not leave cips or hand bands in it and now it is getting longer she is going to have to get over it!

It probably doesn't matter quite so much yet but when she's older if it stays curly then don't wash it as often.

The curls may fall out or they may stick, godsons curls fell out and then it got cut off and no more!

All my tipson curly hair has been through trial an error. dont cut it, its sooo beautiful

From what ive seen if you cut a fringe it either goes straight on the top and doesnt really sit right, or it curls up and looks wrong.

yeeep , my girl had gorgeous ringlets then SHE cut herself a frigging mullet and no more curls , now its no longer a mullet but her beautiful curls are gone :-(

HoneybunsMa - No, I don't have curly hair and neither does DP. DP's 16 y.o. daughter has curly hair though and his mother also had curly hair as a child so it's come from his side not mine. My mother's stoked to finally have a curly haired grandchild after having six straight haired children.

Thanks for the tip on not washing it so often. We are washing it every second day at the moment.

I had super curly hair as a toddler and when it was cut and grew out all my curls went. Mum was very upset apparently.

Do you have curly hair Ange? I only ask as I think DD's hair is going to go curly maybe not but DP and I both have curly hair so I know how to look after it.

Get a spray bottle with water in it and put abit of conditioner in it and spritz in the morning and finger comb. (I'm meant to finger comb but HATE pulling my curls apart as then I look like the wicked witch)

As she gets older don't brush her hair dry unless your planning on washing, when wet comb with a wide tooth comb to get the knots out preferrably when its got conditioner through it.

Oh and don't wash hair more then every 3-4days as curly hair has a harder time getting the oils to the ends.

Try to clip it up if its in her eyes. Her hair will be getting longer but curlier. The top of my hair I personally think looks YUK and dry and I can never get it to how I like. But yep just let it do its thing. Pretty much. Although it was never really tight ringlets, except on really humid days.

Oh and for those of you with hair brushing battles, these brushes are AWESOME!

That and sprayed water every morning with no hassles.


ETA: Also curly hair tends to be easy to keep back from eyes. With my DD as her fringe grows it's starting to create new curls so each time we get a fringe trim we're getting less cut due to it not getting in her eyes as much.

Both my twin girls have curly hair. One has loose 'shirley temple' curls and the other has really tight curls.

With both of them I got it tidied when the hair was quite short. It just looked uneven to me and I wanted each of them to have one good tidy up.
DD with the loose curls has had 2 full haircuts in a year and a few fringe trims in between. While the other only got her first haircut just before she turned 2.5

NO DON"T CUT IT !!!!



DD has gorgeous ringlety hair and i've trimmed her fringe twice now shes nearly 2 1/2. Curly hair looks best a bit wild IMO

Try clips on the sides or a headband if she'll leave it in

My toddler has a curly mop too He is 21 months and I haven't cut his hair yet. We don't have the hair-in-the-eyes issue though. I did notice that when we came home for a visit and there was no humidity that C's hair wasn't quite as springy.

My neighbour's wee girl is 3, they've never cut her hair. They use leave in conditioner to keep the curls in ringlets and stop knots. You could try that to see if it encourages the top to curl more? So I am blessed with a curly haired toddler. My question is when to get the hair cut.
The back and sides are quite tight curls but the top and front are now starting to hang in her eyes. I do want to grow it a bit longer but because the back has such tight curls the top looks wild and the back just doesn't seem to be getting any longer (just tighter curls).





I normally put the top into a top knot with a hair tie but I'm a bit over the pebbles look.
