I think birthing at home is a great option. Really gives you that family bonding time, without the clinical setting of a hospital. As far as I know midwives do not provide any pain relief, other than natural options. Birth pools are awesome for pain relief during labour and I would definitely hire one, even if I do go to hospital later on in labour. You can hire them from www.wondermum.co.nz or www.facebook.com/birthpoolhirenz. I havnt read everything but im trying a birthing unit with this one (first) nic, a lil further north lol in levin but they also have one in PRAM...not sure if thats any help but throught id let you know...ill be sharing my unit birth story in sept thread when it happens so feel free to read :)

I only had one internal in two labours - I was fully dilated by the time they got to me to do a home exam before deciding when to go to hospital the first time, and the second time she was born before anyone could get near me for an exam!  I found the one I had pretty off putting and painful as she made me lie on my back - the only contraction I've had lying on my back and it was far worse than any other!

I had thought they'd just send me in when the contractions were 3-5 mins apart, a decent length and obviously getting closer - but I discovered otherwise!  If I have another (doubtful at this stage but I guess you never know) I think I will go to Kene rather than Wellington.

I had talked about birthing at Kene but because I wasn't sure how I would go with the pain I birthed at Wellington just in case I wanted an epi (which I did but it wore off so never topped it up because it had given me time to calm down!), another reason I birthed at Wellington was mw didn't know how I would go, apparently I am rather small and she didn't think I would be able to birth a baby bigger than about 7lbs (god knows why she thought that?!) so we birthed at Wellington.

I think next time I will skip internals, I found them a bit off putting and I knew when to push...

I had Domino MW first time round and deliberately didn't choose them for the second time.  I had a homebirth with no 1 that was not planned and although everything went according to plan and it was great in my opinion that was luck for them rather than good management.  They refused to believe that I was in proper labour and left me until it was too late to go into hospital so I didn't have any choice in the end.  Afterwards they left the placenta for almost two hours before I decided I was completely over it and wanted it out no matter what.  It annoyed me that they didn't offer the syntocinin even though I could tell that they were getting worried about the delay.  I had other issues with them too that were not related to the actual birth.  In the end it was great having DS at home but I felt that they were lucky that my labour progressed quickly and well and that I wasn't the kind of person who freaked out because nothing went according to plan.

Would Kenepuru give you what you want?  I understand that partners can stay for as long as they wish there and it's the closest thing we have to a birthing centre.  I think the one talked about was considered for the Kapiti Coast but not sure on that.

A couple of my friends have used Dominos, both mws encouraged them to go down the drug free route, but I have heard good things about them!

I can't help with the homebirth part, but I had Ty in a birthing unit and in some ways it feels like a hospital , but perhaps a bit less , clinical ?
It felt as near as a homebirth as I was willing to go , they have gas and I think you can hire tens machines , and the rooms are often a bit bigger and the one I was at had a pool/bath inside , and a shower .
They do have visiting hours but the nurses there told me DH didn't have to leave when the others did , because they want the dads to have a chance to bond with their new family etc .

I had a Domino MW and they were awesome. They do promote homebirths but I still got the support I needed for my twin c-section birth

Lil_Nic, sounds like you got a bad deal at wgtn. Ive had issues with that ward previously (not with childbirth). They had no right to actually tell your DP to leave, its against the health and disability act, especially if you had you're own room. Hospitals arent allowed to keep you first contact person out of the room outside of visting hours but they can keep everyone else out. On our hospital tour with our antenatal group they actually told the partners what to do when coming outside of visiting hours and that they are allowed to visit any time.

I'm not against a hospital birth next time, I had planned to transfer to Kenepuru but I got discharged instead because there weren't any issues etc so we went home.
But I think a home birth would be the best way to avoid that. Nah, maybe it was just us or a Wellington Hosp thing but DD was born at 8.08, got to cuddle her, try latching etc straight after but my mw told me I needed to shower at 9, took me about 40 mins to do that so dp got 40 mins just him and baby cuddling and we were in the post natal by 10pm at Wellington but nurse came and said he couldn't stay even though I was the only one giving birth and had a whole room to myself. And he came early the next day at 7am but was told he had to wait until 8am, so he went off and got breakfast but news spread that she had come so we had visitors all day and he wasn't allowed to stay during the rest period and we had more visitors until 8pm and he wasn't allowed to stay later. Then got discharged the next day. Yup I agree with the being relaxed part, I was able to relax whilst in hospital but I know things 'hurt' a lot more once the mw kept telling me I was 7cm, I am fine with just gas. I was in Wellington for the first part of my pregnancy, but then had to move to Akld (job issues). I used Domino midwives in Wellington who were wonderful and I think they do homebirths.

I understood from them that there weren't any birthing centres in Wellington at that time, but one was being considered for the Hutt?? Not sure if anyone has an update on this.

I used a birthing centre in Auckland, and can't rave enough about it. If there is a centre in Wellington (which unfortunately I don't think there is), they should do tours for you. The birthing centre doesn't have pain relief either apart from gas, but I had a great birth with great midwives, and found the lack of pain relief really wasn't an issue for me as I was so relaxed with a great environment.

At one stage it looked like I was going to have to be induced and go into hospital, and that made me really tense up. They should have a list of MW ho do homebirths in your area. My MW didn't bring any pain relief at all. She had told me panadol and the birth pool.

You can hire birth pools, Aquabub does them. I can totally recommend birthing in the water.   Its great , I had no stitches or anything

Hi I am probably waaaayyy ahead of myself here but am considering a home birth for number 2.

I was completely happy with how my birth with DD turned out and would be happy to have another hospital birth but I was very unhappy with how DP had to leave because visiting hours etc so he never really got to spend time with DD or hold her properly until we got home on day 2. (This is despite me having my own room in hospital as well.)

My questions are, can anyone recommend any MWs in Wellington that do home births, I found a link to this thread, but it is a couple of years old and someone might have some more info to share on home birth mws in WGTN.
