We are trying to get away from packaged foods or things that have labels on them.

It is quite easy to get it in. First off snacks is fruit (mostly) for the kids. So morning tea and afternoon snack already is 2 fruits.

Baked things have fruit in them (although I dont count that in)

Then sarmies or rolls, wraps or pita's have salad ingredients in them. And a serving doesnt equal a huge amount (that was an eye opener for us and you dont count it twice. So if you use carrots in that and have carrots that night it is only one.)

So we usually do a min of three at lunch but it usually is about 4 or 5 right there.

Then we have another 4 or 5 at night. We dont do patatoes every night either. A 4kg bag last us about 8 weeks. Most of the time I have to quickly use it in something I can freeze as it will go off otherwise.

Where I use to make bolognaise pasta as a quick meal we make stirfries as a quick meal. And McKayla now begs for stirfries.

I don't even buy that much fruit and vege, would certainly increase our supermarket spend if I brought that much fruit and vege.
I struggle with eating salad during winter, I do make loads of soup but there's still only a few veges in that - mostly pumpkin or kumara with onion, garlic, carrots and celery - 1 bowl is still only 1 serve though.

I have just challenged myself to eat at least 2 pieces of fruit a day (I don't usually eat any), I am now finding that I am eating at least 4 now and I am doing it easliy. Only day I didn't manage my 2 was Saturday but I drunk wine so that was fruit

When you think about it, 9+ fruit and vege would not be that hard...if you had 3 bits of fruit a day say banana with brekkie, apple with lunch and strawberries for dessert, then you would have 6 veges left to have and if you had 3-4 vege serves at dinner you could have salad at lunch and voila 9 serves

SMoody...that's half our weekly shopping bill, which includes formula and nappies, plus food for us!!! And your vege garden is going to be half the size of our house

I think people will get heart attacks if they see our fruit and veg bill.

Since hubby went on this one course we eat a minimum of 9+ fruit and veg a day. I think about once a week we dont make that minimum.

I spent about $40 to 65 in the beginning of the week and then top up in the middle of the week by another 30 to 40. This is just the fresh stuff and dont include my frozen veg for stews or stirfries.

We are however in the process of putting up raised garden beds and in the end it should be about 40 square metres and we have a few fruit trees as well and putting more in. Berries going in for the kids soon as well.

I shop at the local fruit and vege shop which is next to the mad butcher. By doing meat and vege seperately from mad butcher and vege shop next door we have cut more than $40 from our weekly shop. We are a family of five with a 13year old DD, 9 year old DS and a 4year old DD. So older kids that eat more. My 4 year old scoffs veges and we often have to say no more veges until you eat some meat.

I spend $20 per week on veges which normally includes 2 supermarket sized bags of apples (my son eats 2-3 per day so lucky they are cheap at the moment) pumpkin, bananas, brocolli, cauli, carrots, pak choy and silverbeet. Sometimes I can get a bag of spuds as well if needed.

I went into foodtown to compare and cauli last week were $2.99 mine was .79c Apples I paid ,79c per kilo they were selling a 1.5 kgs bag for $4.99 compared with my $1 for the same weight. Considering I buy 5 kgs that was a big saving. Silverbeet was 99c at my place and $2.99 at foodtown. I shop at both.. sometimes I find the F&V shop cheaper and other times the supermarket is... I find the quality better at the F&V shops though...

Same with meat, usually go to MB but even that's getting expensive.... so I now chance it at the supermarket...

I buy seasonal fruit and veg and supplement with frozen or canned food if the prices are ridiculously high. I do top up shops from the fruit and vege shop but my supermarket seems to match the prices so there doesn't seem to be much of a cost saving and just adds time.

I guess they need a high mark up as they have a lot of wastage. I find it unbelievable that fresh dates are $20kg but dried dates are one of the cheapest dried fruits you can buy. i buy fruit and veges from the market around from my house - we spend about $40 a week - but in saying that - $10 is for cook island doughnuts. and i often buy smoked fish and eggs there too. I buy a grocery bag-full of apples for $5, and usually buy seasonally as well. My lovely chinese lady always shows me what she has on special and is putting bananas aside for me too. i bought a box of slightly squishy ones for $3 yesterday. I have bought a box of pumpkin pieces for about the same price before too.

I try go to the market, but its a 30min drive & so busy i dont even bother 1/2 the time.

I normally just buy whatever fruit & veges i want from the supermarket. I try go for what is on special but we need to eat it so i pay.

There is the odd week ill refuse to buy cauli $4 brocolli $3 spinach $5 etc etc so then we will live off frozen veges for a week.

I do however when I am going down to Welly, buy from the markets on the way back home cos they are cheaper just out of Levin.

We get ours from the supermarket cause like caliandjack said by the time you add in the petrol going to a seperate place its not really worth it. I do find it hilarious that half a cabbage can sometimes be more expensive than a whole one.. It is such a media beat up. The supermarkets make a loss on some things so need to increase the markup on others to make a profit. If you buy in season most fruit and vege aren't all that expensive. Some items seem expensive due to popularity - ie: red capsicums can be twice the price of green.

Strawberries and cherries are always twice the price the week before christmas.

I do all my grocery shopping including fruit and vege at Pak n Save, mostly cause I found them as affordable as the time and petrol spent going to separate suppliers.

This may not be the case in somewhere like west Akl where the chinese run fruit and vege markets are super cheap.

I think the article was saying that on some fruit & veg the supermarkets slap as much as a 500% markup on the cost price, which does seem very high. In saying that, a lot of it is because we don't shop seasonally anymore and want to be able to buy our favourite vegetables whether they are in season here or not, meaning they're imported from somewhere else. After reading the Herald and listening to the radio this morning I wonder what others view on this is.
Personally I very rarely buy my fruit/veggies from the supermarket, mainly due to price. I generally get them from the veggie shop or buy seasonal stuff from people who have it in front of their house (grapefruit at the moment for example)
We also have a veggie garden ourselves so grow a few things. Not so much at the moment, more over summer though.

Some people say they can't do this as they have small sections and/or are renting. Our patch is 2x4m and I also grow lots in pots and planter boxes.

I believe some veggies are very expensive in supermarkets, especially if they are not in season. However I don't really have a problem with this as I just won't buy them from there in that case.
