My friends kept theirs in the freezer and someone broke in and stole it... All four of ours are still in the brown paper bags from the hospital in the freezer, no doubt this one's will end up there too, with my uterus maybe! We own our house but it doesn't feel permanent enough to plant them here. I've heard of people eating them, & other people getting them cremated & keeping the ashes with the intention of them being mixed with their own to be scattered somewhere together. We planted Kahtrell's under a baby pohutakawa tree, it wasn't defrosted, and I think we placed a layer of dirt over it first. We planted L's under a flax. it was defrosted... prob a good idea so the roots of the plant dont get a shock. The flax is charging!

Also a good idea to put a bit of dirt between the placenta and the plants roots... so when the plant gets settled and starts putting roots out- it discovers the source of nutrients and they are in a more 'accesible' form if you know what I mean.
Its not a biggie I guess... just a tip.

I found- when it came to the actual planting- (we had a wee ceremony, linked in with the naming ceremony- so a few people were there)... I hadnt thought about how others might get a bit funny about seeing the placenta... it was fine, no-one seemed to faint at the sight of the blood...but kinda funny now I look back and think... I have mixed a lot of cakes in that mixing bowl. lol

We planted ours under a kowhai aswell. I think it was defrosted as we needed to get it out of the plastic bag. Ours was frozen, though it was defrosted before being planted under a magnolia tree. We put a thin layer of soil over it before putting the tree in. We just put it as is under a magnolia tree. Didn't defrost it. Unfortunatly the magnolia tree died , hoping that isn't a bad sign . We planted DS under a feijoa tree (don't have them over here very often, thought it was a nice bit of kiwiana) and it was a bit defrosted mainly so we could get it out of the bag! We planted Lucy's under a Kowhai tree and it is doing great! It was semi thawed out.

There are special bags that are biodergradable now that you can put directly into the ground from the freezer, saves the mix up of thinking the bag is a nice juicy lump of meat! Ewwwwww!

We're doing this on Thursday (DS's first birthday).
