Good idea, I have a good cup cake recipe, it's a Tamara Jane recipe from Good morning.

Awesome thanks guys! Cool cake Emiloly!! Just had a look at the supermarket colourings and the normal ones have the mixture to make mauve (2 drops of blue, 1 drop of rose pink). I've bought them anyway (they were only $1 something ea rather than $5 odd dollars for the gel ) so since I've got a few weeks up my sleeve, I will have a trial run mixing some colours up and Ashleigh can decorate some cupcakes or something

I have one of those little 4 packs of food coloring from the supermarket, it has a mixing chart on the back, not sure about mauve but purple is 3 drops of red and 1 drop of blue, orchid is 5 drops of red and 1 drop of blue.

The gel colours are good for variety of colours and also because they aren't liquids they won't make your icing runny/mixes in well. I think if you are wanting pastel colours you should be fine. We usually just use the basic food colouring from the supermarket and they work fine.

I am going to be brave this year and attempt a "proper" cake for Ashleigh's 4th birthday. I am doing a buttercream icing and I want to colour it in pastel colours like pink, blue, green, yellow, mauve etc. What type of colouring should I get? I've heard the gel colours are the best but from everything I've seen online, they are good for more bright vibrant colours? Would I get away with just the normal food colouring at the supermarket and just use a little bit??
