There is a purpose built sleding area up there just past the first chair lift on the Whakapapa side. You walk there & it's free. Not to sure on Turoa side but I'm sure they'd have the same.

ETA: check out how much it is to hire sleds from Ocean & Ice.

Take thermos of warm milo to warm yourself up afterwards Plus lots of spare warm clothes.

Thanks ladies - we are planning this for Paris's birthday she has decided that instead of a party she would like to go up to the snow - we gave her the option and this was her choice. So it won't actually be until the first week in august, hopefully will be enough snow by then.

Hey we usually just hire sleds from some place in turangi and then drive up the mountain and park in one of the carparks. Then walk out from the carpark into the snow and find some cool places to do snowmen and sledding. Don't forget to take supplies such as stones (eyes) and sticks (arms) and carrots for the snowman as everything was covered in snow so couldn't find it. lol.   We didn't use the lifts or anything. But you have to wait for some decent snow to do this as it takes a good dumping before down low is covered. Last year we went in June and it was too early. We went up there last season for half a day. The only thing we paid for was sled hire which I think from memory was $20 for more then 2 hrs and I think you got some of that back.

It was a lot of fun even though Cody was too young to enjoy it. Am looking forward to taking him back up this year. We are wanting to know what the charge is, if any, for just taking the kids up to the family area/sled area up there.....
