I thought people didnt but have had about 4 friends talk about my baby shower this time. I think I'd rather go out for afternoon tea or have a shared one, and get them to bring food. Definitely put on the invites that gifts are not needed: put nicely like "In place of a gift, please bring a plate to share" or something.

Just to put an idea out there.
I threw a diaper party for my best friends second baby.
She didn't need any baby clothes so we decided everyone would just bring a bag of disposable diapers (different sizes so she didn't have too many newborn ones!)
She didn't have to but any herself for 7 months after baby!

I am definitly having a shower for my second as some one said why does only the first born get a celebration and plus not just for the presents but for getting the girls together and having an afternoon of games, gossiping etc lol

Lol Hopes yeah sheesh 100 people!!! I just think like WHY??? Its a baby shower... which means you're pregnant... which automatically infers discomfort, excessive tiredness, nausea if you're me , awkwardness with every move... WHY would you subject yourself to a baby shower where you have to be nice to so.many.people??!!!

PL yay glad it helped!! If you have kids coming you could always get them their own canvas and do handprints for the baby/s. For our wedding we had a big board and I painted a tree trunk on it. We had different coloured ink and everyone put their thumb/fingerprint on the tree as leaves along with their name and man its the coolest thing ever!!! You could have a canvas with a tree trunk and have any kids place their handprints as leaves along with their names. Also have some play stations like an area with blocks, an area with crayons and paper, a dvd going if you have a spare room... We do that whenever we have family stuff and it just makes it easier knowing the kids aren't bored brainless in someone elses house.

We had a sweepstake and everyone put their guess on one side and contact deets on the other so they could be contacted for a prize after baby arrived.
Could you have a combined babyshower? And then have maybe a tshirt for baby #1 and a all-in-one for baby #2 with fabric pens for people to leave messages on? Since I'm assuming nobody got to celebrate baby #1 with them since they were overseas.
We got a canvas with messages welcoming the baby so maybe you could have one for each of your SILs kids? Or just the baby if you don't do a combined party.

IMO games are awesome lol but thats coz I like winning what about some word games if they're a quieter bunch? Or you could just go all out and do the team game where one person feeds the other person baby food while blindfolded then they swap and the other person feeds the original person a bottle of fizzy while blinfolded hahahaha omg I love that game! In fact I would have a baby shower JUST for that game!!!

Otherwise you could just have a proper afternoon tea theme like this with would make it special without rowdier games

Hi all

I have a question about this - I'm throwing a shower for my sister-in-law-to-be and this is her second. They were living in the UK when number one was born (18 months ago). Its more of a catch up for her and her NZ friends. She has asked for no gifts, but perhaps for people to bring afternoon tea. Is this wording ok?

Is it ok to have a couple of games? Or I was thinking a little sweepstake (DOB, sex, weight) given that they don't know what they're having. I don't know how to award a prize, though (or if I need to - maybe its just a fun thing to do?). Maybe getting the ladies to write their guesses on canvas, and maybe with a little message, for SIL2B to have for later (or is that tacky?). Maybe just messages on a canvas?

yeah i don't think the pressie thing is such a biggie - like someone else said, most people will buy you a pressie when bubs is born anyway. if i've bought someone a pressie for their baby shower i don't get them something else when bubs is born, and neither do any of my friends (maybe a card, flowers or baking though)...

Two of my friends have had afternoon teas and just phrased it something like to celebrate the arrival of their new baby. So didn't call it a shower but still having a celebration for the new baby. I had one for both my babies (big age gap mind ) and i'll have one for the next one, if I had 10 kids, I would have one for each , not to get gifts, but as a way of getting the people I love together in one place ,for the sheer purpose of saying

I don't like baby showers for 2nd babies as fell its present gathering but I did want to catch up with all my girlfriends before the baby arrived so I had a dessert evening when my hubby was away fishing.

Yeah I probably wouldn't call it a baby shower TBH as I *really* don't want/need any gifts but the frozen meal idea sounds great...and just an afternoon tea to celebrate baby coming I think is nice. So I shall do it but put my thinking cap on first to come up with a different name rather than 'shower' lol

Or even a Up the duff celebration rather than the focus being on the baby and buying baby stuff but celebrating the pregnancy? im having a shower for my second! didn't have one for my first though - i left it too late the first time round and just couldn't face it! Im having a girl this time, so do need girly stuff - had a boy for my first. Am having a girly morning tea, and I don't expect people to bring a plate. i say if you want to have another shower, go for it! Each new baby can do with a few new things, and a wee stretch and gro or whatever doesn't cost the earth. If i bought someone a baby shower present i wouldn't give another at the birth, but would take around a meal after baby born. I know quite a few people who have baby showers for the 2nd and everyone bought presents as well. I think the frozen meal is a great idea! or you could have a morning or afternoon tea and ask everyone to make cupcakes or something like that, instead of presents. Or another idea is if everyone wants to buy something get them to put a few dollars towards a mag subscription...such as OHbaby/

I wouldnt, i thought baby showers were only for your 1st baby. So people can buy you gifts etc to help set up for your future family etc.

I would have a get together with friends, have coffee and cakes etc.

What my friends and I have done each time one of us has been expecting #2 is to have a baby shower morning or afternoon tea and we have all taken a frozen meal for the expecting Mum. I had one for Jae, but thats because with B I was living too far away from any of my friends and family, so they jumped at the chance to do one this time... not many people showed which was a shame cos we had a lot of fun!

I dont know if I will have a baby shower or not with #3... but I would prob have a girly 'high tea' afternoon thing and play some baby related games...

I wasn't planning on one (thought it would be greedy!). But when I mentioned that to my best friend she was horrified and said I will at least be having afternoon tea

I think a bunch of us will go out for high tea in a hotel. Since we will prob find out the sex now I reckon my friends will go nuts shopping if it's a girl ... but will be easier to convince them not to if bubs is a boy like I'm guessing :)

I wouldn't have a baby shower for second baby - but an afternoon tea would be nice and instead of people bringing a present they could bring a plate instead? I didn't - I had quite a close age gap (22 months) and even if you say no presents people still bring presents and I didn't want my friends to feel like they had to fork out for baby presents two years in a row!

Is this done or not? Mum and I were just discussing it and initially both thought not...however when you look at it from a celebration on the impending birth of the baby, then why not have one for the second? I don't want gifts cos goodness knows I have enough stuff lol but more a nice afternoon tea and celebration IYKWIM?

I won't have to worry for a good few months yet lol but just curious what your thougths were........
