You sound like you are amazing helping out the way you do.

Not having a car is not an excuse for anything. I still haven't got my license and in no way have I let that be a hinderance. There is no excuse for the little one missing out on kindy. OMG that is way way to far for kids of that age to walk, escpecially on their own .

They are lucky the have u looking out for them. I would walk the kids to school too. We have just bought a car after 5 years without one (we don't live in NZ). I don't drive so during the week DS and I still get around without the car. Granted public transport is cheap and EFFICIENT here, but even in NZ I would like to live walking distance from things like kindy and school if we can. I will get my DL one of these days though

XELA, that is really cr@ppy of her to just leave her kids to it at that age And puts you in a really hard position either leaving them to it or taking them yourself and then she still gets away with it

They walk if I don't take them. A 6 year old and a 7 year old, very very busy road (great north rd for those in Auckland) and it's about 3 km's!

My brother and I used to walk home at that age but it was not far and we had no busy roads to worry about. Plus times have changed...

I only got my driver's license last year. Before that DD was only kindy age and I would walk or take the bus to get her there and back.

What would she do if you were unable to run the older kids to school and back?

Hah nope. She doesn't do anything at all. There is no reason she can't take him. She could even enroll hi at a closer kindy but no...

I'm not too sure what to do about it either. I love my nieces and nephews and get so annoyed by her not bothering to step it up.

Having not had a car until the last 3years I bussed everywhere and while it's a hassle you just do it!

As a parent its my responsibility to ensure my children go to school everyday, if that means walking them myself or catching the bus with them then that's what I have to do. Anything less is neglect.

No way should a 4 year old be left to walk home by themselves, I'm surprised the kindy allow it.

I don't have a car, I can't drive so I walk or bus everywhere. Haven't tried busing with the baby yet but we do walk a lot!

I wouldn't let it get in the way of my kids education though! It's actually so much worse than that... She is so close to losing these kids which for so long I have thought would be the worst thing, but the less I see her fight for them I am starting to think it may be a good thing.

The extended family (mostly me) have been doing everything we can to make things easier so she can step up and change but.... nada....

If feasible I would move closer to the schools, but I wouldnt expect a four year old to make their own way to kindy, so I would still be walking them. (although I am assuming I dont have a job?)

I have a family member who doesn't have a car anymore so I take the two primary kids to school and back every day. If I didn't they would bus (at ages 6 & 7) or walk down a very busy road at a distance that is just too far for them at this age.
There is also a 4 year old who has morning kindy who I can also drop off but because kindy finishes at 12:30 and I am at work then, I can't pick him up. He ends up attending about 1-2 days a week if he is lucky because somehow the mum is always too sick to pick him up!
