I love being able to pause & record etc on tivo - We just record a bunch of our favorite shows and movies so often have something to watch when there is nothing on. I think the downloadable content is pretty crap - They used to have heaps more - loads of kids movies and new releases but not anymore so we just use the video shop.

We went with freeview when it came out and it has been fine for we what we want we have two one in the lounge and one in our bedroom. We have a HDD recorder  we have it set up so we record our tv prgrammes or use tv ondemand. I love not having the ongoing cost as we have got enough bills as it is.

I dont own it but I do get a free upgrade to Mysky with my internet and phone and sky all being with vodafone. Turns out we cannot get TIVO because we cannot get UHF reception at our place yet our neighbours can GRRRRRRR! So it looks like we will go with Freeview but we can't get myFreeview because of the UHF thing,. I am so annoyed but refuse to pay Sky an exorbitant amount of money anymore!

Freeview is good as it is a one of payment but ours seems to get a disrupted signal so often. Even when it is fine . If we could give up mysky I would go with Tivo. We spent heaps on freeview when it came out...a new aerial & top line box only to find we could not give up sky. No you dont need a dish to have Tivo....

We have mysky as well, but my mum has Tivo and loves it, I won it through Work so she didnt have to pay anything for it, the downloadable movies are really good to have as others have said its getting better and better.....

You can still have Tivo if your not with Telecom for Broadband it just means

1. You cant put the box on Deffered payment you have to pay for it totally up front either in a store or your next Telecom Account

2. If you do decide to download movies/shows it will take up your Broadband usage, with Telecom it wont..

We have just cancelled Sky and so MySky has gone which I loved - but only for the pause/record/series link etc not the actual channels aside from E and Living Channel.

We now have a normal Freeview box which we bought last weekend for $200 and we can pause, record (record one channel while watching another). Yes you can pause, rewind, series link record, record two channels while watching another etc with a myFreeview box. HD is only on the UHF frequency. Check if you've got coverage here http://www.freeviewnz.tv/all_about_freeview/coverage

I like the idea of Tivo, I just hate the idea of being tied to Telecom.

I believe a myfreeviw box and tivo are pretty comparable in price too.

I've replied to your FB thread.

However, I love my TiVO.
It has built-in Freeview, so you get those channels, good reception and the ability to pause, rewind, fast forward etc.
You can technically only record two channels at once (and not be able to watch a third at the same time, like you can with MySky) but if your TV reception (through your normal UHF aerial) is OK you can flick between your TiVo tuner and the standard UHF setting to record two channels and watch a third (if that makes sense?).

The downloadable content isn't too bad. They're adding more and more to it constantly.
Some of it is free, others aren't. They have whoe TV series (you can check it out on their website - the service is called CASPA).
But, as Mrs_Tiger said, you do have to have Telecom broadband to be able to access the service.
Movies vary between $5 and $7. So cheaper than a new release rental.

But we don't use the downloadable stuff - yet. Waiting for it to get better (still a fairly new service).
So even without that, I think it's priceless.
Being able to pause stuff if the phone rings/child needs attention/cooking etc, is great. And fast forwarding ads on the recorded stuff is wicked

Can you tell I love it?

*another edit - it is also smart - it'll record stuff it thinks you like based on what you've watched in the past.
So I often get little surprises in my "Suggested Recordings" folder of things it thinks I might like.
Some things are a bit "WTF?" (like Chinese TV?!?).

OH! Also, if you're not at home and you forgot to set it to record something, if you have access to the internet where you are you can log in to your TiVo account online and tell it to record your shows remotely

I watch too much TV.

with tivo to download im pretty sure the catch is you have to have your internet with telecom.

so for us not an option as we are happy with xnet.

You cant do any of those things with freeview, although we live in one of the parts of nz that can only get freeview via a sky dish, so it might be diff for you. Sorry thats no help, lol

We currently have Sky but I am so sick of paying way too much for nothing too watch, so at present I have put it on hold and we just have the standard digital channels and it still costs $19 a month.

I am thinking of getting TIVO so that we still get the HD quality picture but also the added bonus of being able to record etc. but then I wonder if Freeview would be the better way to go?

So a few questions for those with Freeview or TIVO

- Can you record, pause, rewind etc. with Freeview?

- Does anyone that has TIVO use the download movies option? What does it cost to do that? Where do you download them from?

- If you have experience with both, which one do you prefer?
