Make sure you get decent gear (which isn't cheap). People ride around in shorts and tshirts but they're still going 50kph. And when you hit a car at 50kph, guess who comes out worse off. I've provided rehab to a number of people who haven't worn the right protective gear on their heads or bodies, and it's not pretty. The average scooter rider comes off at least once a year apparently.

DH has a 125cc, so he had to get his motorike license. Petrol is $6/week (West Akld to city,5 days a week). I keep telling him to take the petrol coupons from the supermarket but he keeps resisting He used to bus, and it saves him 2 hours a day. I have one but do not use it in the city. It has an alarm at that sort of thing. My hubby has had 2 Honda Dios (50cc) and they were such great runners, cost virtually nothing in gas and easy in maintenance. hubby had a yamaha CV50 scooter for a couple years and it was fantastic. So cheap to run! We had to get a bigger car with baby #3 coming, and he decided to sell the scooter and keep our other car (he's a bit of a wuss and winter can be very chilly on a scooter - if you have decent wet weather gear and a good jacket you'll be fine though!). Really economical to run though and he never had any hassles with it. Do you have your motorbike licence? Because that would play a factor in which scooter you could actually ride.
