Yep we opened ours last week. We got $762 this year. Not the $1000 that I was aiming for but still pretty good. I'd say we've been putting in about $15 - $20 a week. Yep I'm definitely doing this for next year. Got a can stashed away with nothing in it lolz.. I've only just seen this - brilliant idea!! I'm going to use decorated formula tins and try to be good about not opening them. I might set up one per child plus a Christmas one and see how we go.

We opened ours in Sept for our Oz trip & had about $220 in it, we've got another one going now which feels heavy but probably only has about $50. I didn't do this as I just found the thread but it's a great idea...going to go out and get one ready for 2011. My sister keeps one and opened it last month and had around $200 in it and that kind of money this time of the year would be a big help!!

We don't do this for Christmas but we do put all our spare change in a big money box - it's a big iron pig we bought in Chinatown

It actually needs emptying again soon, last time we banked it there was nearly $400 in there and that's only 5c - $1 coins!

I love feeding all the coins into the change machine at the bank. So much fun

We have done this for years and it is fantastic! We have a big money jar that we put coins into and it pays for our annual family holiday! We empty it every couple of months and bank it into a high interest earning account. Last year we managed to save $3k in the jar and went on a family holiday to Perth for two weeks!

We are also like lilfatty and have savings plans set up for Lauren to pay for a car and either uni, an OE or a house deposit.

Its surprising how much all your spare change adds up too when you pop it away for a rainy day!

I have $121 in my tin so far.

I don't put mine in the bank coz I like the excitement of opening the tin after I put the tree up. Will eventually lose track of how much I've put in there.

Don't know why I love my tin so much, it's actually an addiction. I'm not a smart saver or shopper type person at all bit for some reason this has become a tradition.

I actually found my 2008 tin just before this Christmas. I had taken the notes out and put it in a hidey place with all the coins in it. Had $70 exactly in there. Yep on top of the amount that comes directly out of my pay and into the kids high interest savings account, I bank whatever is in the jars (we have three, one for each child and one for Christmas incidentals) monthly so that we can earn interest on it.

Yep The Warehouse or the $2 shop type places have them. If you're doing $5 notes you'll need a larger size one as it gets hard to stuff them in after a while. It's an addiction, there a few people in our family doing this now and we've become quite competitive about it. I spent one $5 in the 6 months we did this last year And that was when we bought Harper's carseat so I didn't feel too guilty about. I get quite upset though when I go to a store and get coins back instead of a $5 note, really doesn't please me at all.

I have $81 in my tin already

. We won $61 in last weeks lotto and
any little wins like that go in the tin also.

Harper also has a piggy bank and all 50c pieces go in there or anything I find lying around the bottom of my handbag orfloor of the car. He'll be rich by the time he's 5, two bank accounts and bonus bonds. Might hit him up to shout me a massage.

I would like to do it, but don't think I can. We have a coin jar that I use for school things like trips, BBQ days, fund raising & they have a lot of them

I am going to do Bonus Bonds again this year, I won $40 worth last year. We are planning a weekend away in oz me & DH, so want to save for that.

I think this is a great idea too, and I think I'll make a point of taking cash out when I go to the supermarket so I can put that in as we're mostly an eftpos family. Just wondering of anyone wants to join me.

Every year after Christmas we buy a new money tin, one of those ones that you have to open with a can opener, and we put money in throughout the year to help out at Christmas time. We've done it for the past 5 years and it usually covers all the groceries for the Christmas period or for us to go away or whatever.

We used to put loose change in each week but half way through 2009 we started putting $5 notes in. So every time we got a $5 note it couldn't be spent and it would go straight in the tin. We had $367 in the tin when we opened it and that was after being very slack and not taking our money out in cash every time. This year we're continuing the $5 note thing and aiming to get $1000.
