My little boy is 2 tomorrow. Its gone soooo fast Slow down we man

He loves boots and even take's his gumboots to bed with him. Love's playing outside and getting into everything. Love's cars and anything boyish. And most of all loves his oldest sister and follow's her everywhere

Holly that was really useful, thanks for sharing. Bedtime is getting worse not better for us, and night waking too...but that could be partly to do with the fact that DS is now a big brother. We welcomed Hugo a week ago today. Hey blossom - re. dressing, LOL, have a look at the thread i posted on the toddler branch about two months ago about exactly that topic!

M is a bit of a climber, I think, but then I see what our friends' 20 mth old is up to and I realise that she's actually not at all. The stuff he gets up to is crazy.

We've not had too much trouble with sleep lately, knock on wood. Especially considering we've had a 3 week trip to the UK.

Went to a talk by a sleep therapist last night, and I feel so much better now. She said to look at your child as a whole, if they are happy and healthy you are doing a great job, and in the scheme of things sleep is only a minor part of the whole.

Re the night tantrums, apparently it's just a phase at this age and you just have to wait for it to be over - there is no strategy, just ride out the storm and comfort them once they let you.

She did also say though that at two their appetite drops off, so at dinner time avoid raw fruit and veg as they fill up on it, and then they are not hungry for the high carb and protien stuff they should be having to keep their tummy's full all night. Two year olds often start night waking again which is often put down to the 'terrible twos' but they are actually hungry.

Got some other strategies to try as well so got a big weekend planned !

Hi everyone, it's been aaages since I was in here, so just bee catching up on all that's been happening! Congrats vixgirl & dango! Not long to go now for you MrsJMcD - very exciting!!

Things have got super-busy here - Dylan is now at daycare 3 days a week, while I work from home making & selling jewellery. He's totally full on, but very adorable at the same time. He and Liam (my 4 1/2 yr old) are pretty inseperable when they're at home together and generally get on great. His favourite word is "cuddle", which he shouts until he gets one, hehe. He thinks he can do everything his big brother can, so he's a bit of a dangermouse jumping off things, etc! No plans at all for a third baby here - we always said two children, and even though I'd dearly love a wee girl having three children just isn't practical for us (+ there's no guarantees re gender of course!)

Oh we stuck the paste off here as well ... Shes weaned herself off a bottle at daycare but she lives a bottle for her day sleep at home or at her grannys and always askes for her night bottle. im not to bothered about the botle thing i'd prefer to know shes having a good amount of milk myself and dp dont do hot drinks/milk etc so if we weaned her we would prob forget to give her any

DS is much slower to talk than DD was. We're up to stringing 3 words together but no further yet.

Its hard to get him to keep any clothes on at all - no matter how cold it is he strips off. He's become very defiant and I hear "NO!" a lot. Battling to do things like brush his teeth... he runs off with the toothbrush yelling "No! Emmett's teeth!". Would be ok if he actually brushed instead of just sucking the toothpaste off.

How is everyone going with toilet-training and weaning off bottles?

We havent started either yet.

Wow havnt posted here in ages - Can't believe our babies are nearly 2!
We are an extremely good talker here her daycare compare her to the 3.5year old in terms of words and use of them. Like a sponge now they pick up everything!!!!! She also has really good manners without being promted which is fab!
I came on to ask is any one else having trouble dressing there todlers .. its an absolute nightmare here some times she does to bed in what she wore during the day and we ahve to sort her out in her sleep, she lives to chose what she wear so i have managed to sort 2 outfits for the day and let her pick. Somedays she just wont us take her pjs off! drives me

Thanks,I think he was getting a bit over hungry/tired coming home from daycare. I gave him a snack as soon as we got home last night and he was in a great mood all evening.

I think maybe it's because he knows a baby is coming soon and he's getting grumpy about not being picked up as much as before, and Mum being asleep most of the time.

Holly - here are some things I do with my grandson to avoid/cope with tantrums:

1. Explain what you want them to do or what happening etc so no suprises
2. Distraction - with food toys etc
3. Ignore them until they stop (making sure safe etc)
4. Choose your battles - if not that important give in and give them what they wanted. Not all the time but sometimes it is the best option lol
5. Try to keep them to a routine to avoid over tiredness or hunger as this makes it worse.
6. Walk away if too much for you and/or get help when having to do things like food shopping etc. At the moment I look after my grandson at my place while my daughter does her food shopping rather than going together like we used to, to avoid tantrums in the supermarket.

maybe that's what's been happening with Harrison - 'waking' for no apparant reason then packing a massive tanty when we try to put him back to bed....

Toddlers go through a clingy/separation anxiety phase about 2, right? DD started getting them around this age and she'd flip out at night but without actually being awake.

I can cope with the climbing, but now the temper tantrums have started as well... . waking up in the middle of the night for no reason then lieing on the floor kicking and screaming for 20 minutes before he'll let anyone near him. My sweet natured cruisy little boy has been replaced by an angry toddler. Wouldnt mind if I knew what sets him off, but it can honestly be anything. Then as soon as it started it's finished and my lovely boy is back.

YES! Harrison is equally active and similarly obsessed with his neocate tims at the moment..cheeky to boot, pushing boundaries like nobody's business! Thanks Azze i think it is a boy thing. My almost 7 year old was not as bad as Quinn is but then Quinn is number 4. He has older brothers and sisters to watch lol. He is loads of fun. MumtoMany I've just been assuming its a boy thing. They are little whirlwinds!

On the weekend Emmett drew all over the walls and then ate the crayons. He likes to throw stuff, thump stuff and jump on/off stuff. We have installed a new lock on the front door because he lets himself out and we can no longer open most of the windows because he grabs the windowsill and uses it as leverage to climb up and over... and its a 1 storey drop to the ground.

Quinn is really full on. I am not looking foward to when he goes into a bed. If i turn my back for a moment he would have climbed onto the table and then climb onto the bench open his neocate and tip it onto the floor if i have left it on the bench. Then he climbs onto the back of the sofer pushes the window open and throws anything he can out it. If i leave a washing basket in the living room waiting to be folded it will be all over the living room. Oh and just now he got his truck pushed it over toward the dvd player stood on it opend the dvd player and took DD's dvd out that she was watching.

Does anyone else have a full on child like this? Im going alittle crazy here lol

On the big bed topic, hubby caught Miss L trying to climb out her cot this morning! eek!
So we're organising a big girl bed for her, we're moving house in 2 weeks, so will keep in the cot for the first couple of weeks for familiarity, but then try the bed, hopefully she doesn't keep trying to climb out! Otherwise I think we'll just take the side off the cot in the meantime.
Gone are the days she will be in bed until we get her out!

So we moved Emmett into a big bed on Sunday.

It has a rail but he fell off once on Sunday night. Last night had no problems.

We are talking about #2 but arent all that rushed on it yet.

there's been a shift of rooms - my stepson has moved in to what used to be the spare room and Harrison has moved in to his old room. I was keen to keep Harrison in his cot (which transitions to a toddler bed) and if we needed to, buy another cot for the new baby when he was out of the bassinet. But DH was quite insistent that he should just go in to a bed. MrsJMcD we're also starting to think of transitioning to a bed - Emmett has started sleeping diagonally across his portacot because he's getting too tall for it.

We tried one night on a mattress on the floor but he kept getting up and walking into things. Very disoriented!

Yay dango, congratulations - what a lovely wee girl!

I am 5 weeks away from my due date and desperately hoping this baby comes early because they are not going to let me go overdue and are already talking c-section rather than induction.

Harrison is quite unsettled this week, getting used to not being at daycare every day and being at home with me...I've been holding off trying him in his new room with a big boy's bed until he get's more settled but he';s so interested in it that I thought I'd give him a crack for his nap today - massive fail! Hannah Reese arrived on 25/5 via c-sec (again).



Spent a week in hospital - including 4.5 days in NICU under the blue lights for jaundice. She's been doing well since we came home though.



Miss Alex is...jealous. But slowly warming up to "baby".

And I completely forgot just how messy newborns are! Squirty poo, milky burps down my cleavage etc. :P

Not alot happening here. Quinn has had his first hair cut. Starting to talk alot more. He has been my slowest talker the rest of them were talking loads by now. However i think it has alot to do with having older brother and sisters talking for him

good stuff Holly! We're not quite at that stage yet. Our PAFT lady who comes to visit every month said that toilet training (or learning as she calls it) can be an absolute breeze if you wait until they are ready and don't get stressed about it... it sounds like you're pretty close!

Might be ready for toilet training - DS came up and said poo to me last night, then ran away to the toilet, came back a wee while later with a clean nappy from his room - and he'd done a poo ! We havent done any specific toilet training so I guess all the stuff about them telling you when their ready must be right. something that seems to be missing off catgirl's list is knowing BEFORE they need to go... and being able to tell you that (whether in words or actions).

Mrs Ana, M is really interested in the potty and the toilet, and what goes on, and she'll sit on it happily and play with toilet paper etc, often before her bath too as we've noticed that's when she'll often wee. She hasn't done anything in the potty yet, like you, but I guess if she did and we made a big fuss, then she might be more likely to do it again...

But that's not really toilet training yet is it, cos we are guessing when she might need to go, and if she does or not it's luck? More like what they do in EC - where you get to know their habits and put them on a potty or whatever when you think they're about to go? ^ so .... I'm wondering what I'm doing now is a waste of time then? She's sometimes aware when she's got a dirty nappy and will tell you when she's done "wees!", so each night before her bath we put her on her toilet seat and just sit there for a while singing songs, no luck yet and normally pees on the floor as soon as she gets down!

I agree lisame - if she is ready. Have just been reading about it too OmrsOanaO for my grandson. The book I just read said if they are doing some of the following: over 22 months, aware whats happening in nappy, comes to tell you they are wet/dirty, can understand basic instructions like sit down, stop running, bring to mummy, can concentrate on an activity for 5 - 10 min.
From my own expeience you need to be consistant. When you start do not go back to nappies except to sleep. Have them wear underpants that they can take off and for the first few days no trousers but a skirt would be ok. Also can check if they understand wet/dry like hands or clothes. Rewards are good and a "happy dance" by Mum/Dad/Gran when they are successful. Never be negative about wet/dirty nappies even befopre you start so they don't try and hide it. I used to read to my daughter before her afternoon sleep so she would do poos in the toilet. otherwise she would be in bed for 5 - 10 min then do it and I would have to change her nappy and re-settle her to sleep.

^ I'm wondering if I'll end up joining you in October, DD decided to arrive at 36 weeks for no particular reason, I hadn't even finished work! This time I WILL be finishing at 35 weeks!

For some reason I'm quite nervous about telling family? I know that my dad will be a bit funny, he'd like us to be more financially secure, we're looking for our 1st home at the moment.

I was debating getting DD a tshirt printed, then printing a pic onto a postcard and sending it out to family, cute or silly?

Hi all - back lurking in here looking at old posts! very funny to read back, I found out a couple of weeks ago I'm pregnant again! was a wee bit of a shock as we really only started trying last month. Haven't told anyone yet though I'm going away for a girls weekend in Qtown this weekend so will have to spill the beans or they will no something is up.

My wee man is just so cool - hes got a great sense of humor and is just the cutest darn thing. Though hes been getting his eye teeth so hasn't been happy the last couple of nights - why he has to get all 4 at once I'll never know! in the meantime, here's a question from me.

has anybody found their kids suddenly becoming intolerant of a food type they love? Our regular breakfast is porridge with raisins. Mad also loves grapes.

Three times over the last week, she has been sick at night in bed. Two times it was before we go to bed, so we could change her and her bed, and give her some water. Once, it was after we'd gone to bed and we didn't know till morning. It obviously doesn't worry her too much because she doesn't get upset or wake up. She's not even upset when we get her up to change her bed.

But it upsets me... it seems that it's something about dried fruit and grapes that is upsetting her tummy. I don't know why it would only happen at night - maybe because she's lying down and so indigenstion or something is worse?

Anyone had any experience of this at all?

She's not sick - no fever, fine during the day, happy, eats although not a huge appetite at the moment, and at the risk of TMI it's clear that it's only certain things that are coming back up. dried fruit and grapes.

It's pretty obvious when David is doing a poo, it's the only time he stops moving ! When he's finished he goes and gets a nappy, then lies down and takes his pants off to be changed. We give him nappy off time in the evening, and if he needs a wee he usually runs to the bathroom to wee on the lino floor. I think he's getting pretty close to ready, but we move house in three weeks so I dont want to start anything until we're moved in and he's well settled -once we start I dont want to go through the whole regression thing and have to go back to nappies.

Havent even thought about toilet training yet. Pointing at wet nappies some of the time isnt close enough to being ready, especially when she will sit in a dirty one and not tell us!

Hi ladies

We welcomed George William into the world on 8/2, I managed to get the VBAC I wanted which I'm really happy about , although towards the end I didn't care how we came out, but my labour was pretty quick, about 6.5 hours start to finish...

Sophie is doing really well, she is miss independent and picks up on everything. I can't believe just how much she understands... She loves her brother, but still has her odd moments where she pulls his hair or slaps him, so we have to keep a careful watch at all times...

Ditto here - she's never ever complained about dirty nappies.

She finally took her first few steps last week, but hasn't walked since then (unless marching a parent around).

Her vocabulary has been increasing really quickly though, and she knows most of her letters (can point to more than she can say). Her latest word is igloo from her alphabet song - not sure she'll be able to find a reason to use it in real life though!

I'm 28 weeks tomorrow. LOL... I don't remember anything from the first time round. I think we just put a potty in the bathroom and gave positive feedback when she decided to use it.

Hey, has anyone got any brilliant ideas for sleeping arrangements while out. We used to just put her down wherever. But now she wants to be up as long as we are, and gets out of bed and comes to find us. she doesn't get that we put her to bed and want her to stay there. Apart from lugging a portacot out to friends' for dinner... anything that works? Would be nice to not have to leave because it's gone ten pm and she's still not asleep. We have a good bedtime routine and try to stick to that while out as much as possible... but it's just too interesting for her!


No ideas here I am afraid - we've pretty much stopped going out and only entertain at home at the moment. Partially because the kids wont sleep anywhere but home and partially because no one's house seems childproof enough to contain the Destructababy.

hey all! I have some catching up to do. Azza, great to see your update on Emmett.

Mad is lots of fun - starting to come out with words, grape is the latest. Can you tell she's motivated by food? ;-)

She's been on one sleep a day since around 1 yr old, but her one sleep can be a massive one - 11 till 2pm some days. 12 till 1.30 others. depends what we're up to.
