Once you feel letdown then push the button. If you forget to push it (which I've done before) then it changes itself after a while. (swing model) i have just brought this and its working great.

However how long do i use the 1st phase for before switching to the 2nd ?

there is no guideline in the instruction manual and the website says nothing too
