I guess the specialists recommendation makes it a little easier to make some decisions because you have their advice as guidance. I hope they find a reason as to why this has happened. I think it will help you to heal, the 'not knowing why' part is what stays with you... if you have some answers you can feel at peace(one day down the road a bit) after such a rough time... hugs to you both.

Also they couldn't see a bladder and the stomach was small. At the specialist recommendation we are going to wait until the next scan to hopefully get some answers as they couldn't see everything they wanted. The outcome is still the same but by waiting we might find out why this has happened and how it might effect future pregnancies.

    Author: Charly28
Subject: 25678
Posted: 31 May 2013 at 5:53pm

Hi Blondie

Firstly, I am so sorry that this has happened.. Pregnancy should be something that is enjoyed so unfair

Secondly, I'm a lurker, and currently TTC after losing my baby at week 19 (I made the decision to terminate based on the severity of my baby's condition) this was only last month (I gave birth to my baby on April 12th 2013).
At my 12 week scan my baby's Nuchal food measured at 11mm! So, significantly larger than your babies bear in mind Don't make the terrible mistake of comparing your situation to mine, as my story does not end well.
But yes, I can absolutely relate to this situation!

I was also referred to the fetal medicine clinic immediately at Wellington Hospital for an Amniocentesis. Unfortunately, they couldnt get enough fluid from me to send away for testing, so I had to wait for two weeks, then the same thing happened again!! So it was another 2 weeks. By then I was quite far along!! The hospital didn't know why my body was not giving out any fluid, when there was clearly fluid there! Retrospectively I wished they had done a CVS and just got on with it, but they were confident about doing an amnio!
Anyway, it got to a point where by the time I got results back I would be at a point in my pregnancy where it would be difficult to terminate!
During this horrible time, they rescanned me every week, and the fluid was just increasing every time, I hoped like hell every time for the fluid to have reduced significantly.. I was a WRECK! And just felt like a shell of a person. It was mentally and physically draining.. And I put my pregnancy on hold mentally for sure you can't help but disconnect

I wish I could give you a big hug right now because I know what you are going through The waiting is just so incredibly hard!

Anyway.. I waited and waited.. and after failed amnios etc.. At 18 weeks it was crunch time, my baby girl had fluid behind her neck reaching all the way round to the front of her, fluid on her bowls, spine, stomach and around the ambilical chord.. Everywhere!! I was crushed, heartbroken.. Devastated!!!
Even if my baby tested negative for a genetic abnormality the reality was, my baby was not in good shape and things did not look good.. So I made the very hard decision to terminate based on the facts I had been given hardest decision I have made, yet also the easiest.. If that can possibly make sense.. My baby was in seriously bad shape (the specialists couldnt believe how her heart was still beating with all the fluid and pressure on her organs) and with the facts I had been given, it felt wrong and selfish to continue the pregnancy.

I SO BADLY wish I could give you a positive story, and there are many positive outcomes out there PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I searched and searched and searched on the Internet for positive stories, and found many and I would take comfort in those, but there are also really sad stories out there (like mine), every story is different!

Early on (week 13) I was told that the fluid (at that point it was only behind the neck) could resolve! And you do hear about these things resolving often around week 14, 15 or 16.. So give it time!! Perfectly healthy baby's are born all the time who had high nuchal fold measurements - I was told this many times Doctors reassured me as I think they knew I was very fragile.. But each week my baby accumulated fluid in new places!

IF in the unlucky event that your test results are not good, or if your baby's condition deteriorates and you do decide to end the pregnancy.
I can't tell you how you will cope, but that you WILL, and it will be ok! I never thought I could cope. I never thought I was strong. But you really surprise yourself!

But yes, I have been through something very similar up until only 6 short weeks ago.. And I can relate in every way.. Only my story didn't end well, but many do I have everything crossed for you at this hard time!! And I look forward to hearing more good news about your baby the pre lim results are fantastically optimistic so stay positive!

AFM I am 28, a Wellingtonian, I don't have any children and that was baby #1. I have been given the go ahead by my doctors and midwife to start TTC again. And I have been assured that the chances of my next baby having the same problems are slim to none.. Such a relief.. I have to think of the positives!!

If you ever want or need to talk, I am here

Sending you all my love and support - You are in my thoughts!!

Do keep us posted if you can.. Stay positive!
xx
At my 12 week scan the Nuchal food measured at 7.8mm. The radiographer was very concerned and so was my midwife. She referred me to the fetal maternal medicine at chch women's and I was seen on Friday, 2 days after the initial scan. They rescanned and it now measures 8.4 and the fluid goes from the forehead all the way round down to the back. It isn't very good odds for this baby but we are trying to stay positive. I had a CVS done, which was a little painful and we get the preliminary results on Tuesday. The rest of the results in 2 weeks time when we will have another scan to see if the fluid has decreased. Finger crossed the test results come back negative and the fluid has deceased. I'm not sure how I'm going to cope if I have to terminate or it terminates on its own.
Has anyone had a similar experience? And what was the outcome?

I am now 37w5days and have been having growth scans. they told me that he was too small but my whole family have small babies. My blood flow is fine though so that's good. He has been growing so they are happy with that but are going to give me an inducement date on Thursday. I would rather him stay in for a bit longer but we will see how it goes. I would try not to worry to much easier said than done I know, but they have you and the babies best interest at heart. Try and get some rest time everyday they say the more rest you get the more weight the baby puts on. They don't like taking them out till 34 weeks at the earliest after that your pretty safe. Remember to keep an eye on your little ones movements.

I really want a calm delivery and have said as much to the docs here so they are doing their best to give me that opportunity.

Our wee bubba is still hanging in there. I am due for my next scan on Monday to check for baby's blood flow and the decision will be made then unless the heartbeat monitor shows signs of distress then it could all change in an instant. We are expecting delivery to be any day but depend on heart monitor results which are done at least every 12 hours.

Our baby is generally healthy, and they seem to think it has good odds given its gestation, I have already had the steroids and am now really just buying time.

Is his growth normal for his age? What were those first days in the NICU like? We went through the unit today and am happy with it but felt incredibly overwhelmed at the time.

Ay thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Im still no better. My lowest reading lately has been 145/95 and thats after my Ob upped my dosage.

BDTM14- I totally know how you feel. I had the same thing with my first. Hard not to worry when every senerio being told to you is scary. I have also started growth scans since baby is only measuring 26weeks and should be 29. Im not to worried yet but then again this is the second time ive been through the IUGR stuff, but have been told if he stops growing he is coming out and since my BP is to unstable they wont induce me and will just take him by c-section.
Hope you got some reassuring news at your MW :)

She has been measuring small since about 26 weeks. But still growing but slowly.

They also sent me for bloods to check up for any infections such as rubella, toxoplasmosis or cytomegalovirus whilst in the womb. Those results should come back in the next day or two (FX)

Im on growth scans every two weeks now and weekly OB appts.

I still feel lots of movements, I dont have high blood pressure. I eat well. When I was born I was 7lbs13oz. My placenta is anterior...and they havent mentioned that there is anything wrong with the placenta. I have had no bleeding either. And everything else in my pregnancy has been fine and normal

So Im really confused and worried as to why this is happening

What they have told me is the blood flow through the umbilical cord is high which means she is not getting the nutrients she needs. Its in the 95th centile and they tell me 100 is abnormal

They have told me that if she stops growing or her growth slows right down then they will look at inducing. I did ask about a C-Section and they said they would try to induce first...but I guess if baby is in destress then they will go for the Csec.

Im trying not to worry or stress out about it but its kinda hard not to sometimes. They have also advised that I go on restricted hours at work to take off some of the stress.

I hope that my bubs does stay inside and cooks a little longer

Im off to my MW this afternoon so hopefully she will shed some more light on whats happening

Congrats on your news. Hopefully you hear from them soon. Sometimes it takes a while even to see a midwife. The main thing at 5 weeks is to make sure your on the correct dose of folic acid and iodine. As far as tests go there is the blood test your Dr (hopefully) got you to do when you confirmed your pregnancy ..
.then at between 9 to 13 weeks another blood test if you choose to do maternal serum screening and a scan at 12 weeks goes with that...so you have a bit of time up your sleeve. The only other thing is you might want/need a dating scan if you're unsure of the date of your last period or have a longer or irregular cycle. That usually happens early ...I had mine at 8 weeks. Well good luck and try not today stress yourself out too much..
And once again congrats

I had open heart surgery when I was a baby and have been fine ever since.
I went to see a doctor yesterday and she gave me a pamphlet with a number to call to find a midwife, etc. But she just called today to say that because of my medical history, i'll need to be referred to the high risk unit in Auckland.
Just wondering if someone can explain to me how quickly you normally hear from the high risk unit? The doc said I should hear something within the next 2 weeks, but I'm a bit nervous now about sitting around and waiting, especially as all I've done is the home pregnancy test and I got my blood pressure checked (which is normal).

Any feedback on all the next steps would be great :)

When i say natural I mean no foetal monitors, no drips for my insulin and sugar and a birth at home, which will never be possible. If i need pain relief then ill use it, and with inductions its more likely that it'll be needed due to the intensity, strength and the time within which the contractions start after being induced. I can just see myself ending up with an emergency cs..

My control in these first few weeks has been pretty good, but I want to get it better! Ive been floating between 4.5-11 most days (normally 6-12), as long as I catch the early morning rise in time. I test 15+ times a day and inject as many times as I need but usually about 6-10 times. I was going to consider a pump but the consumables cos an extra $150 on top of the pump (from what I heard?) so its not an option for us right now. So its MDI (multiple daily injections) and testing for me But thats ok: Im used to it lol

Edited by KcP

Expect it to be about the 13/14th of Feb. As soon as I get the date, my MW has said she will help with natural ways of stimulating labour. I don't think it will take much. The reason for me not being induced if it can be avoided is simply because last time when they used the prosto gel on my cervix I over reacted to it.
I have to say the MW's at nat womens are wonderful. I have my own as well which will be great but I am looking forward to having this little girl there now.

Bubs is now measuring 5 pounds 13 oz at just under 37 weeks so size is looking good so far.

So I suspect Waitakere won't either. I really don't want to go to Auckland. I was hoping for a natural birth and have actually been reading about unassisted at home births. This is my last baby and I really don't want alot of interventions. Strange because with my boys I was happy to go along with anything I was told by the docs. Since then I have had a kidney transplant from my lovely hubby and it has been 14 months now since the transplant and I have switched to safe for pregnancy meds and the doctors have given me the go-ahead for TTC!! I am very happy now and am on day 4 of my cycle. So waiting to ovulate really.

I think I might fit in here as my pregnancy will be treated as a high risk.I had tremendous support last time I was on here and thought I would come back! This month we get to officially start trying. Some might remember me.. I would have been due in Sept 2010.. Let me know if you do :)

Now, How do I get one of those little banner thingies to chart my cycle at the bottom of my replies and posts? Totally forgot ! hehe

My nuchal measurement at the 12 week scan came back as an elevated risk for Downs syndrome, but could also be symptomatic of a heart condition if it's not that. Just went to my first specialist appointment yesterday and everything looked perfect at the scan. Now just have to wait 4.5 more weeks to do the anomaly scan to see if there is anything else going on.

Gen - you are in my April due date thread, you just jumped in today. I'm the crazy lady updating the list (I have issues, I won't get into them ). Anyway, I can't imagine having to be on bedrest for that long. I'm a stay at home mum and could easily manage a visit if you ever want someone to come over for a cuppa and a chat. Where are you in Chch?
