My time at BC was not so good..

I had registered to deliver there, but when my MW called to say I was in labour and ready to come in, they said they didn't have any space for me. DH and I were already on the way, and it was midnight. When we arrived both labour suites were empty so they let us in and left us to wait for our MW to arrive. That was the last we saw of any of the BC staff until my baby was born and they came in to kick me out of the labour room lol. I was put in a shared room at 4am, though I was semi expecting a private room as I had requested one and had birthed there so was a bit bummed. DH had to leave and come back at 8am.. The first BC MW up in the rooms was very brisk with me, I guess they were busy, but the second, Lesley I think, was just lovely. Anyway BC was definitely not what I had expected and I ended up going home asap just a few hours after the birth! Sorry for the rant.. just another view. Good luck

ETA they also forgot my breakfast.. the lady next to me got hers delivered but none for me, I asked for some and they bought me one piece of toast lol and I was starving!

Birthcare is great! they do say that if you do labour at birthcare and then feel you need an epi then you can drive over to auckland which is like 2mins away......but im with the others in not wanting to get up after giving birth and transferring.....

 

they were great and gave me a private room for free...seeing as though i was on my way there when i gave birth in the car

 

and i also went with the MW that Arohanui is talking about

Birthcare have the contract to provide Post Natal care to women who deliver at Auckland City Hospital. The hospital only provide postnatal care for women / babies with complications or cs. You are entitled to a certian number of nights for free (think its 3) at Birthcare but thats in a shared room. If you want a private room then you will pay (unless you have delivered there).

Its a bit wierd delivering at the hospital then pakcing up yourself and your tiny little baby into the car and driving over the birthcare, but I LOVED our time at Birthcare, and would deliver there next time if they offered epidurals!!!!!

I had Caden at middlemore, was meant to be at pukekohe Maternity Hospital but tings went to custard and got rushed to middlemore, and they were GREAT through my labour, the midwives and doctors were all very nice and caring, and I felt very safe.

My understanding is that if you birth at Auckland Hospital you have to go to Birthcare within 12 or 24hrs if there are no complications. If you book in with birthcare then you have to also book in with Auckland Hospital so you could actually decide at the time depending on how confident you are feeling of giving birth without the epi.

can you not give birth at hospital and get transfered to Parnell Birthcare after for you postnatel care?

yep i had my baby at MM last year. the new suites/ward is great and staff were great but like anywhere are hugely under staffed. we had one midwife doin three of us at sim stages. i wasn't able to have an epi either as no staff to do it or stay with me, didn't need it thou and i had a 46hr labour too. worst part was getting out 3hrs after birth and waitin outside while partner bought car round..urgh not nice place!! transferred to Puke Mat and it was great too wit fab ladies running it.

Hey and welcome to ohbaby

Yep your option is Auck City Hospital or Birthcare. If you want an epidural, your only option is the hospital (I'm pretty sure anyway).

I gave birth at Birthcare and it was awesome. I had a great midwife who can deliver at the hospital or Birthcare, she was recommended to me by someone else on here and now heaps of people on this forum have gone with her (including lilfatty . Pm me if you want her name and details

Im pretty sure you have to birth at either auckland hospital or at birthcare (they dont have birthing suites at greenlane do they)?

Also .. where you birth would depend on the midwife you select, as they would have a contract with certain places.

Hi I am about 8 weeks pregnant and currently on the hunt for a midwife. I've always been keen on the idea of giving birth at Parnell birthcare and their website lists some great looking midwifes. I notice that they don't do epidural's at birthcare though (I'm not sure how brave I am yet) so my question is where else are the popular (and nice!) places in Auckland central to give birth other than Greenlane Hospital and Auckland City Hospital if you want to keep your epidural options open?
