Our cot we bought from babycity and it's much the same as the other ones that people have mentioned. Adjustable base, sides that come off to form a first bed, easily adjustable side rail.   

Some cots come with a teething rail, which could come in handy.

A great tip: build the cot in the room that you want it to be in. My grandpaents very kindly bought us our cot, it's a Touchwood (Kiwi made) and it can be set at bassinet height (with 4 sides), cot height (with 4 sides) or you can take 1 side off at the cot hieght to push up next to bed (or use as a couch for her room later) or you can remove both sides to use as a 1st bed. I don't know what brand our cot is, but we got it from farmers and went from bassinent height, down to a normal cot height and now we have converted into a first bed (removed one of the sides).

You can try Trademe too, I got a decent wooden one for $150, which will convert into a bed later. Haven't got the baby to really try it out yet, but otherwise is in good condition.

We bought both of ours (we have one at Mums place for weekend visit naps) off TM and havent had a problem with either.

We tried the three side cot up against the bed, but there was still a gap and Issy like to be close .. so in the end I kicked DH out and she slept with me lol

I dont think you need something extravagantly expensive .. most of the time you are paying for a name.

Just make sure you can drop the rail with one hand (as you will have a baby in the other).

Depends whether the cost is a concern, we got a cheap $300 one from baby factory and it has been completely fine, no probs at all with it. I'd never fork out for an expensive one. So many cots it's hard to know what's what! They all look very similar yet some are much cheaper than others, and of course some are far more expensive! Any brands/styles that are good, or that should be steered clear of?

We're looking for one that can be pushed up against the bed with one side off so baby can sleep next to us but in his own space. Anyone else do this, or have done this in the past?
