All of my girls have had new matresses and yep, I aired them before I put them on the cots.

I don't put much in their cots, just a mattress protector (baby factory has cheap ones for about $15), fitted sheet and one blanket, and like First suggested either a flat nappy or muslin cloth under her head to catch spills and dribbles. I don't use bedding at all as my babies are swaddled and then I use sleep sacks rather than blankets. I've already got a brand new cot and mattress, but baby not due til April. Thanks for all the replies

I was concerned whether new mattresses would have bad chemicals and wondered whether it best to use a used mattress because of this..

ETA Is there anything special I must do with a new mattress eg air it out, vacuum, etc??

I was told a brand new mattress for every baby and inner sprung is better than foam

You will need a couple of matress protectors, 3 sets of sheets fitted and flat and some light cotton blankets would be fine for summer or a really light woolen one, cotton and wool breathe the best.

My boys is second hand and it is has done two babies before me. i am looking at getting a new one however as it is looking a little soft in the middle where he lays and I would prefer it to be firmer.
Really I think its an either or thing as to whether your replace it.

As for things you need in the cot. Fitted sheet and a sheet plus a blanket or too. I have also found having some old flat nappies to go under his head a great washing saver rather than having to change the whole sheet after ever sleep (very spilly baby here).
Don't get a bumper and these are not recommend as they are a strangulation risk.

Issy's mattress is 2nd hand (as is the mattres in her cot at her Grandparents house).

Depends on how 'paranoid' you are. We got given a cot but I went and bought a new mattress because I'm well and truly paranoid, if you want to call it that. But at my AN class we were told second hand mattresses were fine, as long as they came from a smoke free household and you put them out in the sun for a couple of days to give them a proper airing and a dose of UV disinfection.

My bubs is getting a bit long for her bassinette, and I am looking into buying/borrowing a cot.

Just wondering if I must buy a brand new mattress, or can use a borrowed one, and what other things I will need for the cot over Summer.
