Author: LittleBug
Subject: 22424
Posted: 15 November 2008 at 10:31pm

All of our sunhats are hand-me-downs... but I like the bucket-type ones because they shade all the way around (face/ears/neck).

As for sunscreen, we use the Hawaiian Tropics 'Baby faces and tender places' one as well, SPF 45. As someone already said, needs reapplying after swimming though. It has never caused her excema to get any worse either.

Regarding Vitamin D intake, most of us don't apply nearly enough sunscreen to block absorption of Vitamin D (it has to be layered on really thickly). And only around 15 mins of sunshine gives you a good amount of absorption as well. (This is what we were told during our nutrition and health papers at uni, anyways).

Not too dark colours as you will land up with sunstroke. needs to regulate the temperature. I dont like these plastic type kind of things at all.

What sunscreen is safe for baby/toddler, but still effective in the paddling pool say?

Water resistant ones. I dont go by the "suggested" amount of time left before reapplieing. But apply at least every 35 minutes and definately right after you towel them off, put on again. And use a zinx oxide one on the face for toddlers. Babies is best kept out of the sun as much as possible (but I still put sunscreen on my one, but we never had skin problems at all.

What kind of sunglasses does your baby/toddler wear?

As a baby she was kept out of the sun from 10 to 4 and never directly in the sun. Older baby she had the babybanz sunglasses on. Seeing we are not in SA and in NZ now my next kiddy will have to get used to sunglasses really quickly.

Where can you buy those towel things that look like a poncho (ie they are made of towelling material, but have a hole in the middle with a hood attached to the hole - kids wear it like a poncho at the beach etc)?

Warehouse has them, and have seen them at Farmers as well.

Her sunglasses are from Physique Eye care, but she had ones from PP when she was younger.

We use Alba Botanica sunscreen from Health2000 cos its natural and Islas skin is real sensitve.

Its good to het a hat that has some sort of fastening to keep it on. It is spf45 and doesn't seem to react with Sam's ezcema. It does need to be reapplied after swimming though.

What kind of sunglasses does your baby/toddler wear?

Baby Banz. Fantastic as the elastic strap holds them in place.

Where can you buy those towel things that look like a poncho (ie they are made of towelling material, but have a hole in the middle with a hood attached to the hole - kids wear it like a poncho at the beach etc)??

You can get them from the warehouse, bed bath & beyond etc etc. Basically most places that sell linen/towels.
