but we had this conversation at work on friday most of the local anasthetic used by nz dentists is perfectly safe as it disipates really fast thru the blood stream. . . medazalam is a big no no

and xrays are fine after 23weeks      i learnt that when i was pregnant as i swore balck and blue they wernt so i phoned the dental school in otago and asked

it depends where the tooth is,if its a front one, then you will probably want something there for cosmetic purposes, if the tooth is completly taken out , then a bridge is probably the cheaper option (and not very cheap)but cheaper than an implant, which is the other option .

Oh my gosh, this now filling-less tooth of mine was an unnecessary root canal, done without the anaesthetic (the tooth wasn't dead either, ouch!!) and the dentist broke a needle deep in the root too and spent a painful hour trying to dig it out! it is cheaper , and root canals are only 85% successful anyway ...so even if it does get filled then there is still a chance it will play up again in the future ...

The same anesthetic that can be used when your pregnant can also be used when bf , if i could only remember its blimming name lol .
We've had a few people come in with new babies who are breastfed and if they get the other kind of injection they have to wait two hours before they can feed.

If your filling has fallen out its best to go in as soon as you can , to diminish the risk of infection from food getting into the hole, but its ok to wait a week or so .

You can unfortunatly get wisdom teeth come through at 40 ....
A normal dentist can take them out (its fun ... ) but if its too impacted they will generally send you to an oral surgeon, they would do an xray to see if it was impacted or not before starting treatment .

I've had all 4 of mine out now. The top two had cut so the dentist just pulled it like a normal tooth. The roots had twisted so he drilled it in half and removed it in two pieces. If they haven't cut, then you need to go to a surgeon and be knocked out as it's not something you want to be awake for lol. Same goes if the tooth has grown funny and can't be pulled normally. He pulled those two with about 5 injections.

Gah, that reminded me - I've recently noticed that one of my wisdom teeth is just emerging through the gum and seems to be growing more sideways than downwards. We want to TTC #2 soon and I'm wondering whether I should book in to have this tooth removed soon, or just hope it doesn't keep growing/get infected and not worry about it?  

I googled "removing wisdom teeth" (BTW can normal dentists do this, or only oral surgeons?) and one site said that if you haven't had any problems with wisdom teeth by the age of 30 you're unlikely to in future. So how come this one is finally moving and I'm almost 31??? Perhaps becoming a Mum at 30 has made me a lil bit wiser?

TBH IM more at a risk of radiation exposure seeing as i actually work with the xrays than if your just getting an xray done for part of treatment . (So i stand in another room when the dentist does xrays now )

Neferiti, when i said they shouldn't do xrays, this is going by the NZ dental assistants course, which i did 2 years ago ,according to them it IS a risk to have injections and usually dentists will avoid it if possible, ive worked for 4 dentists and never saw any of them do anxray on a pregnant women ,but realistically one xray will very rarely cause any long term effects, however better be safe than sorry i guess .

I had an infected and sideways growing wisdom tooth removed when I was about 24 weeks pregnant, the dentist could obviously see that I was pregnant but went ahead and did an xray anyway. I have to have a root canal and was told it was ok while pregnant to have injections.
I was also given an exray first and they put that heavy coat thing over my front.

However, I had extensive xrays just before I found out i was preg with my last baby and paniced about it. After talking to specialist as the hospital about it they said that I hadn't been exposed to enough to harm the baby - and this was in very early weeks during developmental stage. And by extensive, I mean 100 times more than you'd get at a dentist. Hi there, ive been a dental assistant for four years , so have some experience in this area

There are some anesthetics that are safe to use in pregnancy , unfortunatly due to preggy brain im having a complete blank as to what they're called , but your dentist will know.
And yep, xrays are off limits , just be sure to tell the receptionisht your pregnant when you make the appointment , they should make a note of it .

I have just had a disaster and part of a ceramic cap has broken off one of my teeth (while I was eating bread - weird!!)

I will have to wait till tomorrow to get it fixed - given it was put on when i had a root canal - I am wondering what they will need to do.
