Gas - do not worry about taking ventolin. Safe for you and baby! the worst thing that can happen with taking a lot of ventolin is it can drop your potassium levels but mine only went lowish after the week in hosp and four hourly meds of six puffs! They just get you to up the potassium in your diet ie. eat bananas!

Hi all - was pleased to see someone had started a thread on asthma. My asthma packs up big time during pregnancy. This pregnancy has been no different from the first. Normally don't get many major attacks but had a doozy at around 12 weeks. Ended up in hosp for a week. Was on prednisone for much of my first pg but weaned off it about 4 weeks ago probably since I had to stop work and that may have decreased the stress levels somewhat! Have a fantastic specialist team that I am under at Palmy hospital. No prob with taking steroids as the placenta is set up so it doesn't let any pass. Just have to have growth scans at 28, 32, and 36 weeks. It gets me pretty pissed off as there is enough to deal with in pg without the added hassle of not being able to breathe! The stats I was given was that 1/3 asthamtices get worse in pg, 1/3 stay the same and 1/3 get better. i have mild asthma usually brought on by coughing lots or major exercise. i remember getting a little breathless alst time & asking the pharmacist bout the inhalers. mine isn't an overly common one & there was no yay or nay in the medical books, but they said as long as i was careful, it hsould be ok. Hi,

Well i'm different again, I did not have asthma pre pregnancy, I got flu last week and now I have it, its definately not an infection just asthma a few days of using an inhaler and I feel much better.

My DH has asthma and I am currently using an inhaler more than him - my dr said nothing to worry about the baby is taking up all my room, so it will probably go away as soon as he pops out.

using the inhaler is ok for me and the baby though.

I had some major issues with my asthma in the early weeks, but things seem to have settled down and I am feeling much better at the moment. Yep, pregnancy aggravates asthma here. I don't even have an inhaler usually - haven't needed it since I was a kid, so I assumed I never would again, but both times being pregnant has bought it back... only for the duration of the pregnancy though. Definantly talk to your Doc about it - I left mine untreated for a week and it was awful. I have asthma and had to take my reliever alot more this last week but I think that has to do with being sick and change of seasons. My MW told me astham can go two ways when pregnant, it either gets better or realy bad, I hope I'm one of the lucky ones that its got better.

Thanks Vanessa! Sounds like it is because of pregnancy then. I gave in before and took my inhaler, and now I have the shakes as well as wheezing again! Hi Rachel
I too suffer asthma. Both my GP and mw said to monitor it closely as pregnancy DOES aggravate asthma. I've been pretty good this time around - except for the usual pregnancy breathlessness but not asthma related.

My first pregnancy saw me on steroids at 7months pregnant because I didn't monitor myself properly and seek help when I thought my asthma was worsening.

Keep an eye on it - don't be afraid to take your puffer (4x a day is still okay).

Hi! Any other ladies with asthma finding it's getting worse when you're pregnant? I've been taking Symbicort, two puffs twice daily and have hardly needed to use a reliever since I've been on it. But in the last week or so I've been wheezing a lot. Not sure if it's just the change in seasons and nothing to do with being pregnant, but was just wondering what other people are experiencing.
