I woke in the middle of the night to check on Alize because he came home from DC with a cough. No wheezing or the usual runny clear nose but anyway go tup to fine him grunting and whezzing so bad but still asleep my poor wee man. I woke and gave him 6 puffs of ventolin via the spacer. He just went back to sleep. I checked him and his grunted had stopped and the wheeze wasnt as loud so went back to bed.

This morning I went in and again he is grunting and wheezing so bad he cant even cough and he says to me "breather" lol that is what we call his ventolin and spacer.

Have put him on 4 puffs 2hrly and will just let the DC know. Otherwise well, so he can attend DC, they have a care plan and know when to contact me if he even slightly chnages and they are really good like that.

OK that is my rant for the day...

Fallen, was your daughter ever tested for allergies?? Alize has been and is allergic to dustmites and animal dander. The paed seems to think these are why my son suffers asthma.

    Author: fallen
Subject: 20736
Posted: 29 September 2008 at 9:50pm

Hello ladies.

My daughter is will be 10 in late November. She was first diagnosed with Asthma at around 9 months old when she was hospitalized with her first attack. The first few years were pretty rough with very unstable asthma.

Finally our doctor referred us to the Asthma society. We went every couple of weeks where I learnt how to correctly use her inhalers and spacer (the doctors hadn't shown us properly!!) We kept records of her health, flair ups, environmental details etc. This helped me understand her triggers and how to act to prevent an attack. I totally recommend them to anyone dealing with asthma in their family. I learnt so much.

Now days her asthma is pretty well controlled, she still uses Flixotide daily, does a peak flow every morning and has Ventolin as needed.

There are two forms of salbutamol inhalers that can be obtained on prescription. The Ventolin brand which occurs a part charge of $4.30 approx per pump or the fully funded Salamol brand. I work in pharmacy and most of the regular customers using these inhalers choose the Ventolin ones as the Salamol don't seem to work for them. Salamol is also prone to clogging so needs to have its nozzle run under a hot tap regularly to clear it.

For the record I choose to pay the bit extra for the Ventolin brand, I find it works better for my girl.

I also get a 'Child disability allowance' for her though WINZ due to her asthma. Its not based on the parental income. Its worth looking into. To apply just get a form from WINZ, get your doctor to fill it in then return it with the relevant identification papers. I've known other people have it for children with severe reflux too. Just an idea...

Fay has never had an attack or even been slightly wheezy but she has been having night attacks of coughing and choking recently (last 6 weeks) I thought it was the tail end of a cold and then realised it had gone on for 6 weeks. so we are trying it for 6 weeks and then having a break to see what happens
neither Nei and I have asthma but I am the only one in my family to miss out so we knew something was coming.

    Author: Shorty
Subject: 20736
Posted: 09 September 2008 at 10:02am

Kels, I would, well that is what the nurse told us.
She said at any sign give him more. We were under the impression that Ventolin was a bad thing and only used in "severe" cases. She put our mind at ease and explained what it is really for....helping open the airways.
For us too, just like the Paed & Dr, it is trial and error. (Hopefully not too many errors)EVERY single child is different and asthma has so many forms. It took us a while to up his ventalin, it took a severe attack during the night to realise they NEED it.

If Tyrell gets a runny nose we literraly up ventalin that day and just keep an eye on him, if it helps we continue, week before last he had a cough....not like his normal asthma cough, so I thought ok Flu is coming, uped the ventalin and he didn't change, didn't get worse but it didn't get any better. We worked it out that it is just the change of weather and he is fine without it. This is our trial and error.

For us when we had the Flexotide (sp?) introduced, we had a huge improvement within the week we started it. It is slow release and I thought, nah aint working then all of a sudden he improved.

We made sure we kept our a regular appointment with the Paed. He would say trial this for ... a month, so we would go back in a month. That way we were able to ensure the correct diagnosis and plan of action.

I havent had any contact yet. I ahve a care plan from the paed we saw. HIs beclozone is 2 puffs per day so maybe I will ring and see if I should up it too 2 puff twice daily.

Luana, maybe I might see if Alize is better on serotide. I have been reluctant to change him as his asthma is unstable and all over the show at the moment, but will def ask now I have had reassurance fro a mother in the know.

Alize is a pro with the spacer and doesnt have the mask at all. He seals his cute little lips around the mouth piece. I think he has clicked it helps him feel better.

My asthma has been terrible this year too.

I hope Jack is given a preventer soon. I saw a fast change once we started here.

Just taught us what asthma was, we have no family history so literally have no idea! Then helped us with when to use his ventalin etc.
The 1 thing that has meant so much to us since she last came, if Tyrell is getting a cold or something minor, up his ventalin. Give him 2 puffs 4 hourly. This will help his lungs to fight whatever nasty is going on in his body.
We have had 2 head colds and both times they didn't go to his chest (finds wooden desk...touches wood) Every other little thing has gone to his chest....including hayfever!

Are your kids on preventors?
If they become unwell or change in weather trigers them, we were advised to increase from 1 puff to 2 puffs twice daily.
Like above this has helped us with fighting off any unwanted chest problems.

Taine gets asthma too. was talking to his child care workers and she said apparently a lot of kids go hyper on the ventolin - something to do with the sugar they use or something. we have the same problem. Two years ago Jake and Taine were both hospitilised with asthma. the day they came out we were on "slowly does it" mode and I couldn't keep Jake off the trampoline. Niiiice. So i have no words of advice.

As for the weather - this is the first time it hasn't effected ME! Yah!
