Author: emz
Subject: 20662
Posted: 06 September 2008 at 8:06pm

Hi DanaJ, basically the jury is out, there is no safe limit for alcohol. If you choose to drink, you choose to deal with the consequences if baby does get FAS or FAE. I didn't drink once I found out I was pregnant even though we had heaps of occasions and Christmas/New Years etc but it never crossed my mind. BUT if I felt like I really needed a wine I don't think it would have bothered me too much to have 1. I couldn't do it in public just because I'd worry about what others thought.

FAE - foetal alcohol EFFECTS is a lot more common than FAS but goes under the radar. Your child can be affected by your consumption of alcohol without having FAS (the different look, noticeably different etc). FAE, usually undiagnosed, causes huge behavioural and learning difficulties which obviously leads to underachievement, and inabilities to function as a 'normal' person without actually being diagnosed as having particular issues. Someone mentioned above that its a crock - its not, its just that FAE is so much more common but isn't easily diagnosed and therefore stats aren't high. I did a paper on FAE and FAS linked to learning and behavioural issues when I was pregnant and it was enough to put me off drinking. I kind of figure its 9 months, I had enough self control to quit smoking and do everything else I needed to do, so it was just another diet change. I would also drink grapetise and things like that.

It is a personal opinion but a very debated topic so you are going to get strong opinions from others here. I just never wanted to do anything that would make me feel guilty if my baby came out not quite right as there are enough things to stress about as a mum without the added pressures we put on ourselves. So yeah, I basically live in the camp of this body is my baby's for 9 months and after that I can drink all I want. But I also never had cravings for it so can't speak from that perspective.

During my preg i had 1 beer on a reallly hot day and i think 1 wine but i had ms until 34wks so couldnt stomach alcohol even though i had intended on havin the occasional glass thru my preg. Then again there were lots of things i never gave up i was just sensible about how i had it ie deli ham, kfc, leftovers etc.

They do promote no alcohol during preg in nz because we are seen as a country of binge drinkers and unable to drink in moderation. To be honest i think if they properly investigated FAS they would find its a crock of sh*t but thats just my opinion as if alcohol did cause it there should be alot more people with it. Author: KiwiL
Subject: 20662
Posted: 05 September 2008 at 7:45am

I too have craved wine this pregnancy... and V as well! The number of times I have been convinced a V would solve all my problems!!!

I also think it's a personal thing, and a couple of sips is highly unlikely to have an affect. I say unlikely though, because noone really knows what is too much. I suspect it might all come down to the 'triggers' theory (the same theories that speculate why some people get cancer and others don't).

Having said that, I think the pressure should be on those who really lack regard for their safety and drink a lot of alcohol during their pregnancies.

In my own personal situation, having suffered a couple of miscarriages and a long road to having a successful pregnancy, I did make a conscious decison not to do ANYTHING that I could potentially end up regretting. And that included drinking any wine (or V!). I figure that 9 months isn't the end of the world, and it will just make it nicer at the end.

You'd probably be surprised by the number of people I have had really confused that I won't even have a sip of alcohol, and the advice I have had telling me that a little bit wouldn't hurt! For me, it's just been about doing everything I could to do what I thought has been the right thing.

I think it is hard to give your own opinions on a matter such as this, without the potential to sound judgemental, even if that is not the intention. And although I don't have a very strong opinion, I know that others do and there is the chance for some tempers to flare. At the end of the day, you've got to be comfortable with your own decisions.

Hmmm, I have tried hard to write this without bias, but I guess you either feel one way or the other - hopefully I haven't offended anyone, because it is not my intention to preach.

I would like to clarify though that all up through the pregnancy i've probably had a total of about 200ml - 250ml of wine. The one last night is still sitting on the bench with half of it left as I just had this terrible craving for it and it just wouldn't go away.

I am careful about what I have. I haven't even had panadol and I quit smoking too. I guess it just sounded like people were thinking I was sitting her boozing it up and that's just not the way it is. I picked a girl friend up from the pub a while ago and there was a heavily pregnant woman there with two vodka premixes in her hand and smoking a ciggy. I think the odd small glass is ok but that is way past the line in imho.

I felt terrible and very unresponsible, I felt I had failed my child already and it wasn't even born yet.

On the other hand, I have a friend that has 6 children and she has had a glass of wine every week with every single pregnancy, she feels that that is o.k and that is her choice. Her children are nearly teeagers now and have no signs of FAS.

Each to their own, but personally I wouldn't risk it, knowing how worried I was about the alcohol I had consumed while pregnant.

I've heard from other sources that no one knows what is safe, and from others still that say a few a week is fine! I can't seem to find a straight answer about what's ok and what's not!

I have one friend who has about 2-3 glasses of wine a week, another who had one glass a week ago and felt so guilty that she went home and cried about it, and another that wouldn't dream of touching any while pregnant. Everyone has different opinions about it! I can see myself having half a glass on special occasions maybe, to be honest I haven't had any real cravings for it so I haven't had to worry about it yet!

After that I had half a glass of wine every 6 weeks. I use to mark it on the calendar and pour my half glass. The weird thing was once I had poured it and had about 3 sips I didn't want it any more. I think for me it was more the ritual. I also use to have a sip of DH's beer every now and then.

I personally wouldn't drink a whole glass at a time and wouldn't drink a bottle in a week but I think a glass every 3-6 weeks is sweet. But that is just my opinion and it really is a personal choice!

At certain times during the babies development, it's more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, such as the first trimester and towards the end of the third trimester. I personally don't think it's worth the risk, but it's an individual choice.

Edited by kabe

I know what it does to the baby but what does it take to get there?

I've had the most amazing cravings for a glass of Merlot. I bought a bottle tonight and am slowly sipping on one standard size glass. I'll only have the one and the bottle will last me for at least a week (maybe a glass every second or third night). Is this too much? All up i've only had about 3 small glasses through out the whole pregnancy and the Doc said they odd glass is fine. I didn't have a drop for the first 12 weeks and only had a glass if we were out for dinner and one on my birthday.

So, am I harming the baby? I know one glass tonight wont hurt but just curious about what you can and can't have.
