Im organising my own one.

Mostly because this is my first pregnancy and i want to enjoy all the aspects of it, and be able to say i had a baby shower.

And also sadly enough my aunty that was going to organise it for me passed away suddenly last month, so i want to do this in rememberence of her.

Its also a good excuse to see all my friends and to have fun !!

Being from the UK, baby showers are a very new and strange concept for me!!

I've never been to one before so not sure what goes on but the games ideas are good. My first baby shower was done by friends and they did an awesome job and didnt let me do any thing at all.....and I will aways treasure that!

We have been talking about baby showers too there...just organise one. I am. Get your mum or aunt or MIL to help you so its not too much pressure on you. Get them to do the food....you buy the invites send them out to ppl. We have been discussing easy games and decor and guest gift as well so I can share my easy pizzy but cool ideas.

We had a few games...

1. Guess how big my bump is? First they had to pick blue or pink wool depending on what they think I'll have. Then they had to cut a length they thought would match my bump

2. Everyone got three pegs to pin to themselves. Then there was a list of 5 'taboo' words: baby, boy, girl, cute, and I can't remember the last one. If you caught anyone saying one of those words you could take one of their pegs. Person with most pegs at the end wins. (We only did this for a little while, but I did it at another baby shower during gift opening time - that was hilarious!)

3. The good old "memory" game - look at a tray of 20 items for one minute, then try and write them all from memory.

4. At the baby shower my school put on, they also (among other things) made everyone bring a baby photo of themselves. Then we had to guess who was who!

Another idea I was going to do at a friend's baby shower (then she went and had her bubs on the day, lol!) is good for if you don't know if you're having a boy or a girl. Offer everyone some lemonade as they come in the door from two different jugs - one with pink food colouring, one with blue. They pick the colour depending on what they think you'll have.

Oh and last thing... I'm a bit sentimental at heart and like having things to make into my own version of a scrapbook. So at my baby shower my SIL put together little "All about me" cards for everyone to fill out for baby. Something like:

What will my weight be? ________________________
Will I be a boy or a girl? ________________________
When will I be born? __________________________

We did the nappy on baby one too and then a stretch in grow over top but did it with two people per baby who could only use one hand each. I had an awesome baby shower my friend threw for me at my place :)

The games we had were:

Every person gets a piece of paper, has to hold it on their forehead and draw a baby on it. Believe me there were some funny pictures!!

We had to peg the washing on the clothes horse, hold the baby and the phone at the same time while my friend had a pretend convo with them about REAL silly stuff! First to hang out whole basket wins!

The good old lemon in stocking game - you wear a pair of stockings wrapped around your waist and there is a lemon in one of the feet that dangles in between your legs. You race with another contestant to bang another lemon (on the floor) across the finish line using the lemon in stocking. This gives lotsa hip thrust actions and lots of laughs!!

MY FAVORITE - guess the poop - get a few different types of chocolate and melt into different disposable nappies. Pass them around and guests need to guess what sorta chocolate is in each nappy - very funny! 1.  Baby songs: in one/two minutes try and come up with as many songs with "baby" or "babe" in it. i.e "hey Baby" "be my baby tonight" "baby baby" "i got you babe" etc

2.  Dough babies: 2 minutes to create the best looking baby from playdough

3.  Guess the baby food: Number jars of baby food 1 - 5. each guest has own spoon and must guess what the baby food is i.e banana custard, lamb & veges etc (make sure the host knows the answers)

4. Put the nappy on the baby:  on a baby doll, each person must put the cloth nappy on the baby complete with pins - blindfolded.  Best time wins.

The possibilies are endless - loads of laughs!!!!

A girlfriend of mine had a baby shower register at the baby factory, where her 'guests' could go and choose a gift that they knew she actually needed.  It did make it alot easier to choose a gift, and the gifts ranged from $3 - $200.  So it kind of suited everyone's budget.  For the bigger items - the grandparents bought those, or a few friends put in for the bigger gift.  It's really just want ever you feel most comfortable with.  You find that most people want to give you gifts that will actually be useful to you, so don't feel bad about having a register or if they ask, tell them....  afterall, there's only so many muslin cloths sets you really need!!!!  I've always found it an honour to go to baby showers and celebrate the mum to be and the baby thats coming, and I've normally been the one that's offered to host the shower for them.  I can't believe after nearly 6 years I'll be the 'guest of hounour 'at my own in a few months...yay!!!

thats really nice of her kriss. I needed help with stuff last time too, but not knowing the sex of the baby made things hard. we got a few outfits tho which was good. This time we don't need things, it mainly a buggy storn comver that i thought maybe if people asked, two or three of them could go in together to get us. lol. I'm having a baby shower in a couple of weeks time. My best friend is organising the games etc, but I sent out the invites and have asked guests to RSVP to her, also we're asking everyone to bring a plate - its just going to be a fun afternoon tea and have also invited kids along too. I've had a friend that hosted their own babyshower and turned it into a desert evening and on the invites it asked that people bring their favourite desert instead of a gift. It was so much fun we still played babyshower games and the non pregnant had champange while my friend had sparkling grape juice.

I'm pregnant with my first too and my SIL was behind mine - with Mum in the loop doing the food for afternoon tea and hosting the party at their house. It went really well... there is something about playing silly baby games and being showered with gifts Really it was just a neat chance to catch up with a whole lot of female friends and relatives I hadn't seen in a while - for some of them it was a good excuse to see my bump for the first time.

Have you looked through the first edition of ohbaby magazine? They had quite a good article on baby showers with interesting ideas in it.

I say if you want to organise your own, go for it Although if you do, I suggest aiming for earlier rather than later. I had mine at 33wks and wasn't allowed to do any setting up or cleaning up... and you wouldn't believe how exhausted I felt by the end of the afternoon. I organised my own baby shower. My step-sister took charge of the games on the day tho so I could sit back and relax.   

Don't be embarressed. If they don't want to buy you a present than they probably won't go to your babyshower. I found I got heaps of presents from people I didn't even invite or keep much contact with. There is something about a baby that just makes people give.

It swings in roundabouts (is that the saying?) you will be at their babyshower one day and take them a present.

My friends have told me I am not allowed to do anything for my shower, they are organising it all.

I am more than happy not to organise anything, I know my mates will do a good job .

With DD my friends organised it for me, with this one I will do my own not for gifts as I already have house full of stuff but more so that we can get together and just have a few laughs. I never heard of those rule befor ...my SIL in USA just had her baby shower...a huge one and this is her 4th baby!!

well thats the same with me, i feel uncomfortable with people thinking i am just organising it 2 get presents for me its more about getting together with my gfs and playing fun games etc!! i think ill go ahead and do it myself, and im really not fussed about getting presents just having a fun arvo with my mates!! supazo I think anything goes and if you are keen to host your own shower then go for it

I personally felt a little strange about having a baby shower because I felt like I was just asking people to give us presents. But everyone started asking when it was going to be so in the end I organised a low key afternoon tea for female family and friends. I only ever had a shower with my 3rd! The friend who organised it had some things come up and wanted me to help with the organising...ie invites etc. I felt uncomfortable doing this, as in I didn't want people think I was organising it just to get gifts. So I just said that we'd give it a miss. I wasn't worried about not having one and knew she had family issues to deal with. But she asked for another friends number and she helped instead.

I think the organising is best coming from someone offering to do it. It really is up to you - there are lots of different sites giving different 'rules' but at the end of the day it is what suits you and your family.

For instance - I've heard that you or family are not allowed to organise the shower - but I know of heaps of friends where family did in fact organise it.

I've heard showers are for the first child only - I didn't have one for my first so I'm having one for my second.

There's no reason why you can't organise it yourself - just depends on your energy levels of course.

Hey ladies,
Its my first pregnancy and i was just wondering if anyone could fill me in on whats the deal with baby showers?? Does somebody else have to organise it or can i hold my own baby shower?? Any cool ideas or facts or anything would be helpful really! Im very creative and love crafts so id love to host my own baby shower but i have no idea about baby shower etiquiette.
